Measurement of 12V driving 2 series LEDs

  • desolder Top 10 Forum Poster Saturday, August 28, 2010 11:46 PM Reply
    I set up a resistor of 6.6 ohms to simulate two LED's driven by this driver. Here's what I measured:

    Vin=12.5V Vout=6.6V
    Iin=0.66A Iout=1.0A
    Pin=8.25W Pout=6.6W
    Efficiency=80%

    Efficiency still isn't that great, but it's acceptable. The driver does get medium-warm, which confirms the loss of 1.65W.

    The good news is it didn't blow up, so maybe it really is capable of 12V as stated in the overview, not 8.4V as stated in the title.

    I can't leave well enough alone! The low efficiency was bothering me so I ordered a few SI2304 FETs and piggybacked one onto the existing FET. The efficiency increased to 90%, and the driver is now barely warm, only losing about 1W now.

    Desolder, the driver still working good with the piggy backed fet?
    I just picked up a few to try myself.

    Hi savagemann - I ended up swapping in a different driver for the project this was in, so right now it's just sitting idle. But it worked fine for the few hours I used it with the piggybacked SI2304 FET.
