Speed & Chipset

  • FaBjE Saturday, August 30, 2008 6:09 AM Reply
First of all, a fantastic product!

But, the speed can't be 1000Mbps because USB2.0 has a maximum of 480Mbps

and does anyone knows which chipset it uses?

The ethernet end is 1000mbit (as opposed to 100mbit), but yeah, there is a 480mbit bottleneck because of USB 2.

It's still (theoretically) 4 times faster than a 100Mb connection.

It uses Asix ax88178 -Chip, more info at link below.

Cd that comes with this device made my XP-system hang up, reboot, bluescreen, reboot... so,

Download latest driver from internet --> http://www.asix.com.tw/products.php?op=pItemdetail&PItemID=84;71;100&PLine=71

    Works fine now =)

I've got a Hawking adapter that uses the same chipset. I use it with an old underpowered laptop, so I've never bothered measuring the speed. It might not even achieve 100Mbps, I wouldn't know and I don't care.

The reason I got it is that Gigabit adapters are auto-crossover (auto-MDIX), so I no longer need to carry a crossover cable or adapter.

I removed the module's case and stuffed it into some blank space inside the laptop, connected it to an internal USB port, and wired it out to the existing RJ45 jack on the laptop. Now my internal ethernet is auto-crossover!

I've just measured the speed at home, and I get 23MB/s for raw data over the network. (that is twice the theoritically rate of a 10/100 card)

With samba file transfer, I get a rate of 11MB/s whereas I had 8.1MB/s with a pci 10/100 network card.

So yes, this is an improvement over 10/100 cards, yes.

    Summary:
    10/100 card: raw: 12MBps practical: 8.1Mbps
this usb card: raw: 24Mbps practical: 11 Mbps

This can seem strange but this is what I got.
