    Is it possible to harden a blade to decrease this softness? A blade that goes blunt just sitting in your pocket is really no use.

    Not really. Sure, heat treatments exists, etc. But the fact is that this is a 8$ stainless knife we are talking about. I keep mine just under the razor sharp level and I only have to strop it every now and then to keep it sharp. It only really lose its edge if you try it on something harder than itself. And even then, since that the metal is not very hard, it takes 2 minutes on a stone or on strop to get it back.
