ATTENTION DX STAFF.... email issues

  • ozOzo Top 10 Forum Poster Monday, April 4, 2011 3:56 AM Reply
Yes, once Tiffany is on the case we can be sure it will happen so I'll stop squeaking on this subject too.

It would still be good if the IT guys could tell us (say a month either way) of when it's likely to roll out and maybe a few other titbits of info on what other features to expect.

From what I can gather from those who know, the hard part is swapping from the old email based account data to a customer number (primary key), then transfering all the existing data like accounts, orders, wish lists, DX points etc to the new databank.

I'm supposing that new features can be more easily added progressively and don't all have to happen at once.

The one thing that affects ALL customers is to do with stock info and management. Computers are very good at keeping count of things... and at automatically generating email notices to customers if those things are available, probably available in 2 weeks, or not at all. Big task initially with so many items but easy to maintain and has to be done. Cutting down on complaints would then leave the forums open for technical advice and other useful stuff.

Is it just me or are there a LOT of people double posting lately?
I thought there was meant to be a spam filter or something preventing people posting multiple posts too fast one after the other.
Not only that, but the site then lets people transcend time itself.

    For example
    http://www.dealextreme.com/forums/Forums.dx/Forum.-100~threadid.869878

That thread has three posts in the following order
    Friday, April 08, 2011 12:21 AM
    Friday, April 08, 2011 1:28 AM
    Friday, April 08, 2011 12:28 AM

The old house of cards is getting jittery.

it happens from time to time. if it takes too long for your post to load we have an impatient tendancy to click on the submit button a few times. then when ever the site gets through it's little episode, you find out you've posted 2, 3, or 10 times. depending on how impatient you got.
the trick to avoid that is to click into a forum topic while you're waitin' for it to load. that's about as simple an explanation as i can come up with.

Yes, but it's happening more frequently lately.
My point was more to do with the stability of the site than with people being impatient or whatever.

If it gets the times so wrong on something relatively unimportant as the forum, what is it doing with tickets (which already sometimes just get lost in the system till people moan in the forum and tiffany or someone then explains and puts it back in the system) or even orders (which Webmaestro I think has examples for).

With the effort of creating new sister/spin off web sites, a reworked web site here would have been of much more use.

I wonder how old the existing code is. How many times it has been patched, altered and repaired by different people, getting larger, more convoluted (hence successively harder to maintain) each time.

Heh, another one: Forum.-205~threadid.870004 ...But I've stopped squeaking about that issue for now. ;)

Re double posting, I have my doubts that it is just our impatience. I've had it happen a couple of times just lately and I'm certain I didn't click the "send" twice. What I have done though, is wait for a while and then click the back arrow "<-" on my browser but I wouldn't think that would cause it to duplicate. Just another bug I guess.

oh i know it's not just our impatience causin' multiple posts... it just adds to it. definately a hick-up or burp in the system.

angel i've been on here 3 years now... i don't think i've ever seen the right time displayed when i post. it's always an hour, sometimes 2, out of sync.

    LOL

I almost post a new feedback regarding this issue because I just changed my Paypal email last month and now my new order doesn't listed in my order summary..

I add a new email to my paypal and doesn't remove the old one because I remember DX link DX acc to paypal according to email.. but I never realize it must be paypal PRIMARY email..

I hope they update the system as soon as possible..

Sorry to bump a 4 year old thread.

Has the implementation of the email change feature been implemented as promised back in 2011?

I'm concerned that my old email address will be given to someone else when I leave my internet provider. This is a big security issue since that person will have the ability to change my password and then access my orders/profile/addresses/etc.

I think it’s safe to say that is a dead issue Rodenti, it’s NEVER going to happen. The only way to do it would be to migrate customer ID’s from email addresses to random numeric primary keys in their data base.

The issue goes back to September 2010 when DX IT staffer Astroitboy told us in THIS POST
that it was on their ‘to do’ list, implying that it would be a feature of the “new and improved” site they were working on at the time. That would have been the perfect time to make the change and Webmaesto even explained in the post following that, how simply (for a competent programmer) it could be done.

About a year later, when the “new and improved” site finally came on line, it turned out to be nothing more than a coat of paint over the same old tattered wallpaper… No change to the customer ID system and no correspondence entered into in response to the many protests from interested customers. So I wouldn't hold my breath!
