Raspberry PI

  • max07 Friday, March 2, 2012 2:46 AM Reply
It is a $25 or $35 (enhanced model) ARM based computer. It is on sale already, but they chose the distribution model that many people cannot buy it, incl. me. It is very popular, I believe there will be clones soon, DX should offer it as well.

I'm third. I wanted to buy it at the day of launch, but shipping price was almost same as price of the board. It will be nice to see this board or its clones on DX.

Me too! They're made in China, so DX should be able to source them (eventually)...

    Also the Allwinner A10 EOMA-68 from rhombus-tech:

Everything I've read makes the Raspberry Pi sound excellent, but if DX sold it would proceeds go to the charity?

I think the manufacturer is supposed to pay a per unit licence fee to the Foundation. But in China, who knows if this will happen consistently, whoever is doing the retailing; once the number of retailers increases, it'll be hard to keep track of total production.

Ah, that sounds like a good reason for them (the charity) to want to keep the number of retailers down.

It would be a good reason for a company to want to limit the no of retailers.

But the Foundation's stated aim is getting computers to kids so they learn to program. Local taxes and the existing distributors shipping policies nearly double the price in some countries (eg Norway, Switzerland, Turkey, Russia, Israel, Mexico, see [REMOVED]).

Particularly in lower-income countries, that hurts the Foundation's ability to fulfill its aim. Allowing other retailers in is the only way to fix that. (& to be honest, with manuacturing happening in China, I think clones/fakes are just a matter of time...)
