How to create a backup ROM?

  • SoA23 Tuesday, June 05, 2012 7:24 AM Reply

I tried to create a backup ROM image for A101, but nothing seems to work. I have seen that dart16 posted some tools and a backup image (link: http://club.dx.com/forums/forums.dx/threadid.1114996 ). I tried to create a ROM image with SP Flash Manager, but it seems that this program can only install a ROM image in the phone, not create a new ROM. I've seen that we can create backups for each application with Titanium Backup, but I think it would be useful to have also a ROM image backup.

SP Flash tool has a 'Readback' option which is supposed to be for dumping the current firmware, however I couldn't get it to work either. It doesn't recognise when the phone is connected to the USB. It will flash the phone ok but not dump the firmware. This phone does have a USB flash cable available however (but not from DE) so i have ordered one to try.

Having done a bit more digging I found this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1594998

MTKdroidTools seems to create a ROM image on your tf card. Its mostly russian but there is enough in English to create a backup folder containing .img and .bin files. It will also recover your scatter.txt file from your phone. Put your phone in USB debugging mode and connect the USB

    [2nd edit!]

SP flash tool can dump the ROM.... Explanation here.. http://bm-smartphone-reviews.blogspot.pt/2012/04/creating-rom-dump-of-your-mt65x3-device.html

Two days ago I found a guide about how to create a ROM dump for MT65x3 on bm-smartphone-reviews:

I was able to create some .img files using this guide, but I haven't posted about this yet, because I don't know how to test them - I don't want to flash them in the phone until I'm sure that these are real ROM files.
I have compared my .img files with the backup you posted some time ago on this forum. The scatter files are the same, but the ROM files have different sizes, the difference is pretty big, from several KB to several MB.
I have used a data cable bought from DX, SKU: 51607 and it worked just as shown in the guide. With this cable I have transferred some files from computer to the sdcard and I have rooted the phone several days ago.

I have seen your last edit after I posted this, thanks.
I tried with MTKdroidtools but the "backup" button is inactive and I can't create any img. I was able to create the scatter file tough.

    Is your phone rooted?

The .img files seem to be genuine.. I have just blown a star B2000 'android & user data partitions onto my A101.. the touch screen is broken on my A101 at the moment so i cant actually access the phone but it has loaded the SPB 3d shell. The screen resolution is also wrong as the B2000 has a higher resolution but it does work

It produced the complete set of .img and .dat files for my B2000 that I flashed (system.img & user_data.img) onto my A101

that utility has been updated.. MTK Droid Root & Tools v1.0.8 It is now in english. I have just used it to take a full backup of my B2000 phone. It should work with the A101, I cant test it with mine as I cant get it into USB Debugging mode without a working touch screen.

I did have to follow the temporary rooting procedure in the utility even though my phone is permanently rooted, but once done, the backup buttons become available :-) Its the dogs dangly bits!

@dart16: Thank you very much. It worked with the new version of MTK Droid. I had to reboot the phone and then to apply the temporary rooting, but it worked at last.
Also, it seems that the backup created with SP Flash tool is good too. I have compared it with the files created by MTK Droid. Some of them, like boot, logo and recovery, are exactly the same size, others are organized differently. The most important difference seems to be at the user data image, but since I made the backup with SPFlash i have moved some applications from phone to sdcard, I have installed some apps, so maybe this is the explanation.

Well.. my replacement touch screen has arrived and so I could get my A101 into USB debugging mode. I flashed the image from the download I linked to earlier and it is all fine (apart from all the Chinese apps!!). The B2000 image I had on it didn't initialise the sim cards so was of little use... but it does go to show that is is pretty well impossible to brick these MTK6573 based phones...

Glad you got your backup sorted..

It's good to know that these MTK7563 phones are hard to brick.
I'm also glad that you could restore your A101, both hardware and software.
