If it's a distance sensor it could also be used as a tripwire, so I'm hoping for distance sensor

I guess it is just a laser diode on a board for easy prototyping, but i'm not sure.

Package list says: "1 x Laser module" and "wavelength: 650nm"

It's just a laser. No sensor or distance measuring.

These kind of laser diode use to have a photodiode integrated. Probably the third pin access this photodiode. Using a mirror to reflect back the beam, it´s possible to made a pass/fence sensor or something like this...

No, I think it's a very simple one, no active driving circuit, no feedback photodiode, just a 10k resistor for power control. You'd need an additional light sensor for this one.

There is no sensor, it is just a <5mW laser. It is the same as connecting a 5mW red laser like sku. 10091 directly to a digital pin and ground.

Has anyone received this module and managed to get it working?

I have received the module and believe it’s faulty but another user (andabato) ordered four and could not get any to work. Check this post. http://club.dx.com/forums/forums.dx/threadid.1200900

And a photo of the module:
