Master Class

    @FallenArchangel
    Thanks for taking the time F.A.. I’m ashamed to say I still haven’t found time to master the “rainbow text” thing yet and here I am asking for more!

    I wasn’t really talking about converting to .gif files, I think they are the video type that go a second or two and keep repeating (like the DX Santa above left) yes? Nor was I looking at uploading video directly to the forum, but uploading say a 2 minute clip to TinyPic so that I could post a link to that file.

    Reading TinyPic “help” again, they say they can host wmv, mp4, mpeg and a dozen other codecs up to 5 minutes long with a limit of 100 megabytes. I tried with a 6.1MB wmv video and keep getting rejected with: "Upload Failed! Invalid format (jpg|bmp|gif|pcx|png|psd|tif)"… So I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. If I read you correctly, the only reason for reducing the resolution would be to keep the number of megabytes within the limit but 6.1 is way short of the 100 maximum! Perhaps if I try converting into jpg or bmp it will work.

    Thanks for those links, I haven’t tried yet but Format Factory looks a likely place to start, or should I say “answers.yahoo” is probably where I should have started. I’m sure my fellow specks of dust in the cosmos will agree that our ignorance is not all to do with laziness or age, but not knowing the right question to ask… or where to ask it!

    Cyclist, I was sure I could remember a time (probably on the old site) back when that was not always the case for off topic threads. Not so?

    ozOzo; I appreciate your invitation to the Old Farts computer class, but I have no burning desire to become a computer geek.
    I think being one geek at a time (flashlights) is enough. I don't think there are enough brain cells left for two seperate geekdoms. If I learn to post a photo in the forums, I would consider that as my diploma.

    A month or so back, when I learned how to use the italics feature, I felt like bragging to everyone who would listen, but I knew I would get more of those sideways glances, (you know, those okaaaaaay glances).

    I will check in often though. Maybe I'll see something that I didn't think would be so easy to do.

    PS. I still peek at the forums column, in hopes of seeing the Old Farts forum, but don't tell anyone I said that. :D

    Eureka!! I actually got something to work first go. ‘Format Factory’ must be almost moron-proof! I managed to download the program, convert my .wmv video to .mp4 and upload it to TinyPic and end up with a link, all at my very first attempt. Amazing. Thanks F.A. for the inspiration

    @dymnomo
    Dymo, this one’s for you. The moment may be lost now but back when we were discussing iPads I thought of this. Poppa could be any one of us. I don’t speak German but I believe the daughter is saying something like: “Do you like the iPad we gave you for your birthday?”

    Oh I know those sideways glances well enough gb, but I’m past the stage where they upset me. I used to think “remaining silent and being thought a fool rather than speaking and removing all doubt” was sage advice. I’ll never make it to geek status either but there’s stuff I still need to learn and less time to do it, so asking a few questions saves time. ;)

    Speaking of things that are easier to do than we expected, posting an image is one of them. When I have a bit of time I’ll post an easy step by step in English rather than geekspeak. It is handy if you have had a little practise in MS “Paint” basics just for getting sizes right. Have you used it?

    Nice. Yes, that's basically what she is saying. Asking him if he's getting along with it and coping with all the apps and such. He says "apps?" and continues using it as a chopping board until he notices her watching him at the end and asks "what?".

    I'm not sure whether I saw that clip first or this app first
    https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/virtual-cutting-board/id518311123
    which very nicely even makes the iPad look like a regular chopping board even more so. Lots of different board designs to choose from lol

    Glad to see you got things working the way you wanted.

    The wmv file should have worked as well, but they don't provide too many details beyond file size and file type so one of the other parameters such as resolution or bitrate or something was probably in a form it couldn't deal with and that got changed during the conversion into something more regular that it WAS able to cope with.

    The Santa in the top left is a flash object. Something slightly different than a gif image (main difference is that it scales better, being a vector rather than bitmap type graphic - looks just as good if blown up rather than looking blocky and chunky with blown up pixels).

    The benefit of those kinds of links you created (or youtube links for example), over the little animated gif pictures is that the animated gifs provide no option for audio, no matter how loud one screams. Like they say, in GIFs no one hears you scream lol

    Oh, and in regards to asking questions or looking stupid, here's my take on it. There is LOTS I don't know. Simply not enough time to know everything there is already available to know. It just comes down to whether I'm interested enough to want to know more about something. If I am, then I would MUCH rather ask a question (or several usually, once I get started and interested) and run the risk of perhaps seeming stupid to someone (those who matter don't mind, and those who mind don't matter) rather than die wondering.

    I think I understand most of that. Thanks again. I can’t by any means claim to be proficient with ‘Format Factory’ as I didn’t alter any of the settings, just left the defaults as they were and got lucky! Just hope I can remember what I did for next time. What I usually do is write a tutorial in simple language that even I can understand, while I’m still familiar with it and save it before I forget… kind of like the one for gb in the following post- :)

    Sometimes I have the attention span of a gold fish. I get distracted too easily. Had meant to include this link as being one of my own favourite video clips.
