This looks like the official firmware updates: http://www.tv2211.com/TechDown.asp
This DVR's model name is JA7204. Be VERY careful when updating firmware - you can easily make you DVR unusable. I've almost bricked mine.
You can also find some info on firmware in this topic: http://club.dx.com/forums/forums.dx/threadid.1256758 (it's for 8-ch modification of this DVR).

The firmware at http://www.tv2211.com/TechDown.asp is international, so you can select the preferred language after the update. As far as I remember, the UI language after update will become Chinese, so be sure to remember/write down the steps required to change it back in the menu.

These DVRs are most probably made by JUAN. The websites have been up and down in the past; constantly changing; currently working are:
The email addresses given on the sites are all fake ([email protected], [email protected], [email protected], but also [email protected], [email protected], [email protected]).
The only email address that seems to be still alive is [email protected] but I never got any response to any of my emails.

    1. Do not perform any F/W updates unless absolutely necessary! Even if one of the extras in the menu is not working, re-think several times, there is a high risk that your drive becomes ruined and most probably you cannot rely on any support from JUAN.

    2. Even though the System Info Menu of my DVR says "Device Model: JA7204" my drive turned out to be actually "JA2004". Please check your paper-based label on the back of the DVR before choosing the right F/W. I selected the wrong F/W for the JA7204 instead of JA2004 and it is now useless. Known versions for the 2004 model are somewhere between 1.6.1 and 1.6.13. For the real JA7204 drive I saw versions 1.8.2 to 1.8.3. I think the letter "S" in the name of the files indicates models with S-ATA HDD support, but I cannot guarantee that.

    3. Before F/W update make sure to remember the position of the language switch in the menu as this might switch to Chinese after the update.

    4. I read that some DVRs are quite selective with regard to the USB. Try different FAT32 formatted USB Sticks.

    5. It might happen that after the update for different and unknown to me reasons your drive is stuck in the welcoming screen "System initializing". It then beeps a couple of times and re-boots periodically. This is a sign that the F/W update process went wrong (happened to me even though my DVR said 100% completed and re-booted). In this case the only help is to load the Firmware from the USB instead of from the chip. The troubleshooting info states that a file help.rom is needed to be copied on the USB drive. Some other forums describe a procedure to find the chip resistor on the board and to shorten it during reboot. On this drive I could not find the chip resistor and I am not sure if this procedure is required for this model in the first place. In my case I found the help.rom file but from another F/W version and this also did not work. Even the 2004 firmware 1.6.13 provided by JUAN was rejected from my drive as incorrect (at the time my drive was still working). My drive was originally shipped with ver 1.6.1.

    6. Some forums describe a procedure to connect to the DVR via Telnet (Network cable. router, proper IP configuration, telnet & linux knowledge are required). Then it is possible to copy the files and folder structures from one working drive to another corrupted drive but this did not work in my case as my DVR could not go pass the welcoming screen so it could not get any IP address from the router.

Does anybody have the firmware for the 4ch version as shown in the picture above this forum? I need any firmware release for the S-ATA model, from 12 down to 1:
    ... down to ....
Does anybody have the corresponding help.rom?
