It is an IR reciever to plug into the 3.5mm IR socket on M3.

It receives control signal from its remote. It is sometimes useful to separated IR receiver when you put your satellite receiver or DVR in a TV rack which hides TV-related devices because hidden devices can not receive IR signal from remote.
