Shipping costs negate wholesale prices?

  • theroboticsguy Tuesday, January 29, 2013 10:45 AM Reply
I need to purchase items for resale and became excited when I saw that volumerate.com offers the same products as DX but at much lower prices. However, the shipping cost goes up as the subtotal increases and essentially negates any savings.

For instance, with a $438 subtotal the shipping cost is calculated as $228. I added the same items to a DX shopping cart and because of the free shipping it comes out cheaper on DX.com.

Let me give you another example:

On DX, LodeStar Soldering Paste (50g) is $2.56 per item. If I order 200 of them on DX.com, with free shipping that is $512 total. On volumerate.com, LodeStar Soldering Paste (50g) is $1.78 per item, but the shipping cost for 200 of them is $177.15, which makes the total on volumerate.com $533. So it's actually MORE EXPENSIVE to order of volumerate.com.

Am I missing something? Why would anyone order from volumerate.com when the the order total ends up being more than on DX?

Yes, I have verify that too, when you buy in VR the bulk rate only equilibrate the shipping price

If you buy 5 it is slightly cheaper than buy 4 because of the shipping cost start to appears in 5+.

But I think it is smarter to buy in DX anyway :)

It differs on the weight of the product and the destination country.
I use an Openoffice Calc/Excell sheet to aid me if I buy multiple quantities of items to look for the right combinations.

Well, I'm in the USA and I tried a lot of different combinations of products and quantities, and every time it came out to either the same price or more then on here.

I had to make calculations for a friend to order Guy fawkes masks in large quantities. And while most orders were cheaper on DX, some were in fact cheaper a piece on VR.
I calculated everything(well,openoffice/exell did, I merely i,puted data,formulas,etc..., it even convert $ to€), on DX always free shipping, but Bulkrate(and 1.70$ to pay on top), compared to VR prices with shipping costs.
And importantly to keep the price as close to €22 as possible to avoid import duties.

Result below, don't try to understand it too much :p but red indicated the best available option to order in larger quantities and sometimes it's DX, sometimes it's VR
