Looks like it two separate boards.
So for unexperienced one as you claim you are, i can give follow advise:
Start from knowing better just Arduino board. How does it works, what capability it provide.
Try to write code. Just blink leds. After time being you'll get better understanding of what's going on.

Then focus on LCD board. This board looks (again) as two separate devices: LCD and keyboard.
So treat them separately. Try to get keyboard inputs first. Try to make interrupt subsystem in your code. Then try to interfere with LCD. Google it controller chip (i suppose it HDsomething), wire it correctly, write a driver for it (in my opinion it is better to write your own driver for better understanding).
After all that you'll be much advanced then i am now :)

I have to mention: I am NOT a guru or something.
In fact i myself in the middle of that way i proposed to you. I have STM8 board, LEDs, keys, and LCD(from nokia 3310 i suppose).
I can blink LEDs, i can interrupt code by key press, but my LCD not working :) And i dont know why :)

So, good luck to us both! :)
