It would be really nice if...

  • gasbag11 Top 10 Forum Poster Saturday, September 02, 2017 12:15 AM Reply

... DX could get a new flashlight that seems to be very popular and selling very well.

It's called an Emisar D4 and it's smaller than most 18650 lights. With an optional18350 battery tube, it's even smaller than  the Manker E14 (sku.436026) yet it's twice as bright as the Manker. (over 3000 lm)

The best part is that it's only $40.00. I think DX would have no problem selling them.

Well, at least one of them. lol

    From some specs elsewhere:

    OTF lumen output at start-up

    XP-G2 S4     : 3300lm

    Nichia 219C : 3800lm

    XP-L HI        : 4300lm

Chinese-made torch? You don't think these figures might just be lies, perchance? Let's see...

It has four genuine(!) Cree LEDs and the XP-L version is an extra US$18.

Cree's own data for the XP-G2 in an S4 bin is a respectable 559 lumens at its maximum rated current of 1.5 A. But that's only about a sixth of the claimed value.

The XP-L HI in a V3 bin (there's a version of the torch with a cool white V3 bin) is just under 966 lumens. The claimed output is almost 4.5 times as great.

The figures appear to come from a review on BLF:

    Official Specs

        None have been published yet.

    Measurements

        Output:

Beam type: Spot plus wide pinwheel-shaped corona (not much spill)

        Power: Edness measured 20.4A on the 219c model with a VTC6 cell — that’s about 75W!

        LEDs: Nichia 219c 5000K

            Lux: ~12.6 cd / 220 m

            Min: 1.5 to 2.0 lm

Max: (measured at start, not at 30s)

                2128 lm (Efest 18350 @ 3.76V)

                2843 lm (Efest 18350 @ 4.18V)

                3517 lm (25R 18650 @ 4.17V)

                3826 lm (Efest 18650 @ 4.18V)

        LEDs: XP-G2 (4000K or 5700K)

            Lux: ~13.5 kcd / 232 m

            Min: 2.3 lm

            Max: 3343 lm  (Efest 18650 @ 4.16V)

        LEDs: XP-L HI (5000K or 6500K)

            Lux: ~20.2 kcd / 284 m

            Min: 1.3 lm

            Max: 4322 lm  (Efest 18650 @ 4.18V)

So the main seller is using the figures from the review, which was written by someone who did some of the coding for the torch. (On the subject of coding, the V1 user interface apparently had no way of turning it off once it got to high. Ha ha.) Are the figures accurate? Are the values from an integrating sphere which has been correctly calibrated?

The claim is that it's the output when the torch is started.
Let's be generous and assume that it's starting up at 25 °C. While this
is NOT how these LEDs are rated, the claimed XP-L output value would be
possible, but only if all four LEDs were each run at their maximum 3 A. Heat might be "just a bit" of a problem. It certainly wouldn't stay that high. I can only guess the XP-G2 version is
    overdriving the poor LEDs.

What does the review say about heat? Hm, the graph of thermal regulation is interesting. In just a minute it has dropped down to about 25%. That's good for protecting the LEDs, and more than enough time to blind oneself.

Right, I'm interested in the XP-L HI version. And some IMR batteries.

PS. I like that it uses a 7135 chip. That's real nostalgia stuff, that is.

+1 for the XP-L HI and an 18350 battery tube.

That would be one awesome keychain light. lol

Yep. If I was buying one I'd definitely throw in an 18350 battery tube.

I remember being stunned when I first went to turbo mode on my Manker E14. (1600lm)

I can barely get my head around 4300lm from an even smaller light.

    @Maye_Tao

Is there any chance that DX could get the Emisar D4 flashlights?

The "related department" will do nothing, same as with every product request I've made.

I have product requests dating back to 2012 that are still "Pending". I won't bother making any more.

    Sheepish

Since there's no reflectors in these lights, would the XPL HI version throw any better than the other versions of this light, (XP-G2, Nischia 219) or would that only be the case if they had reflectors?

I know the HI version is essentially undomed, and does throw better the non-HI versions.

Doh! Never mind. That info is in your post above with the review specs.
