WARNING: DECEPTIVE TITLE!

  • Faerynn Saturday, June 09, 2018 4:15 AM Reply

Product title says "1m USB 3.1 Type-C to USB 3.1 Type-C Charging / Data Sync Cable".

Overview section says "Gtcoupe USB 2.0 Type C (USB-C) to Type C (USB-C) charge cable data sync..."

The bandwidth listed is also a USB 2.0 bandwidth.

THIS IS NOT A USB 3.1 PRODUCT!

Could this be the type of cable referred to in this excerpt from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB-C   ?

    Non-compliant cables
Many cables claiming to support USB-C are actually not compliant to the standard. Using these cables would have a potential consequence of damaging devices that they are connected to.[45][46][47] There are reported cases of laptops being destroyed due to the use of non-compliant cables.[48]

I don't about how compliant they are, to be honest, but I was looking around for proper C-to-C cables, and I stumbled across a review of one of them. The reviewer stripped such a cable and showed that it uses only 4 wires (i.e., just the USB2.0 part). This seems to be a very common practice unfortunately, to make such cables look very cheap.

There is a discrepancy here between the product title and the Overview section: based on the Overview section here and them claiming USB 2.0 here along with USB2.0 bandwidth (480Mbps), it makes me strongly believe it's one of those "4-wire" Type-C cables and not a USB3.1 fully functional Type-C cable, so if I had a USB3.1 device hooked to another USB3.1 device with this cable, the speed would be VERY slow, and that assuming that those devices would even see one another!

From what I can understand then, this cable does not necessarily damage equipment but very well may, depending on what it is attached to. Being capable of plugging into a USB 3.1 Type-C receptacle does not make it USB 3.1 compliant.

“USB-C 3.1 cables are considered full-featured USB-C cables. They are electronically marked cables that contain a chip with an ID function based on the configuration channel and vendor-defined messages (VDM) ...”       ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB-C )

It is highly unlikely that, at the price, this cable has the correct type of cable marked as 3.1 and the ID chip, in which case it should not be sold as USB 3.1 Type-C. In fact the only honest way of presenting it would be to specifically state in the title: “(Non-3.1 compliant)”.

I agree - this is simply deceitful.

DX has found a new way to deceive customers:
Use reviews for different products that have not been bought
by the person who wrote the review.
