this is pretty bad... japan is probably the most prepared country on the planet when earthquakes are involved and this one tore them up pretty bad.
those of us that pray need to say a few for japan and where ever else the tsunami's happen to tear up. it didn't seem to do too much damage to the west coast of the u.s. but the earth ain't done quakin'... aftershocks can be as bad as the initial earthquake.
    Howdy from Ohio!

Lots of extended news broadcasts about it here.

The top down shots of the waves moving across the land was at first a little hard to comprehend. Were those grey rectangular shaped sections being smothered buildings, I wondered. Then they said the wave crest was around the 10m mark. Not just cars, but shipping containers, drifting along like bath toys. Not to mention the houses.
If people on foot somehow manage to get above the crest to be floating on top, they'll have to contend with being crushed by all the floating crap.

I think the tsunami looks likely to be a bigger problem than the earthquake (for which they are indeed quite well prepared - they said some buildings were still swaying half an hour later, absorbing the forces in the spring like foundations or whatever).

Though the nuclear issue may overshadow both the earthquake and the tsunami.

Initial official reports were that no radiation leaked (something about the water for the cooling system failing or being shut down as a safety precaution for the earthquake and the backup failing too) and everything was under control. The latest of the official reports I heard was that the radiation leak was 8 times higher than something (safe limits? acceptable limits? not sure now, but there clearly was a leak, which can't be good). Some non official group claimed that the levels are around 1000 times higher. Apparently a 10km exclusion zone around the nuclear reactor was being enforced already.
