Compatible Firmware - My testing and notes + Links

  • alexsim2004 Thursday, September 8, 2011 6:09 AM Reply
I have been testing various firmwares on this S10 box from DX, and have made some notes on the performance of the box for each firmware.

In terms of Clone Bombs / Clone kills - it seems that any firmware after 31st July 2011 will make the box show a Chip ID of 'FFFF', and when rebooted, the clone bomb will kill the box, and is only recoverable by burning a compatible firmware via a Null Modem cable. And any firmware (That I have tested so far) up to and before 31/07/2011 will show a genuine ChipID and will not kill the box.

I have been testing the following firmwares:
    Download link: http://www.mediafire.com/?vv9qrarefsm6lqz

Original Firmware that shipped with the box:
    - Openbox branded
    - Audio 'clicking' issues
    - Reboots are quite frequent on certain channels
    - Often has severe lip sync issues
    - Single channel line
    - Recordings played back easily
    - Sky card works and can view scrambled channels
    - Shows genuine Chipid

    FAV 11 Avatarcam - 31/07/11:

    - Skybox Branded
    - Occasional Lip Sync problems
    - Shows genuine chip id (No clone bomb)
    - Can record to PS or TS
    - Hard to playback recordings
    - Single channel line
    - Sky card doesnt work (wont unscramble the sky channels)
    - S9 Based Firmware
    - Occasional reboots on problem channels - e.g certain sky channels

    March 2011 Firmware: - 25/03/2011

    - Skybox Branded
    - No lip sync issues (or very very minor)
    - Sky card works and can view scrambled channels
    - Records in same format as original firmware (.dvr)
    - Easy to playback recordings
    - Single channel line
    - Skybox branded
    - Shows genuine chipid (no clone bomb)
    - Occasional reboots on problem channels - e.g certain sky channels but not as bad as original firmware
    - Remote still works for putting box in and out of standby
    - S9 Based Firmware

    Openbox_S9_Europever - 30/06/11

    -Openbox Branded
    -For S9 Receiver
    -Hard to play back recordings
-Shows genuine chipid (no clone bomb)
-Did not test further as could not work out how to play back recordings
    -S9 Based Firmware

    Skybox S10 - 31/07/11

    -Skybox Branded
    -Has 3 Line channel list
-Shows genuine chipid (no clone bomb)
-Some lip sync issues on TV and recordings
-Sky card doesnt work (wont unscramble the sky channels)
    -S10 Based Firmware

I have added all of these firmwares into a ZIP file, which can be downloaded from here:

    ------------Update: 05/10/2011:----
I have just tested the firmware:
    Openbox S10 - 14/09/11

    from www.wydvb.com/download.asp
Can be downloaded from here aswell: http://www.mediafire.com/?n4nn0nfd56ic8qn

Initially, after flashing, the box showed a chipid of 00D0, which sounded good as this was a genuine chipid. However, after around 5 restarts the chipid showed as FFFF and then proceeded to kill the box, I am not sure why the chipid would change like this.

    - Lip sync issue seemed to be completely resolved - Everytime you use the on screen display or EPG, the channel flickers off and on again, which only takes a second but ensures that lip sync issues do not occur. This is a good fix.

    - It works with a Sky card and can decode all channels correctly

    - Although I did not get a chance to check every channel, I tried it with a lot of channels and it never rebooted once, it looks as though they have fixed the rebooting channel problem.

    - Recording seemed to work fine, but I did not get a chance to check the timer function.

    - This version also includes a media player, so you can playback other media files as well as the boxes own recordings, however the codec support seemes limited, and did not play the Xvid or MKV h264 files I had on USB. But the boxes own recordings played back fine.

    - This firmware has the 3 channel wide display, which I personally dislike, and prefer the single line channel list from the S9. But each to their own preference.

    - Openbox branded, and firmware is built specifically for S10 boxes.

    - Overall I was very impressed with this firmware, and it does fix a lot of issues with the previous firmwares, it is a shame that it has a clone kill - and it is also intriguing that it initially showed a genuine chipid, and then reverted back to FFFF, I might have to try reflashing again and see whether I can get the genuine chipid to stick, as this would be my new recommended firmware otherwise.

Thanks to gauss99 who brought our attention to this firmware and a new firmware website which I was not aware of before.

    ------------Update: 07/12/2011:----

Hi guys, just a quick update for some of the latest released firmwares:

    Openbox S10 - 17/11/11 (Yojia)
    File name: OPENBOX_S10_111117.abs

    - Chip ID shows up as 'FFFF' and then will kill the clone box (Clone bomb)

    Openbox S10 - HDVBS_S10 - November 2011 (Wydvb)
    File name: HDVBS_S10.abs

-Chip ID shows up as '00D0' (Genuine) on this DX Clone box, and will not kill the box.
-There are problems with lip sync issues on live tv and recordings
-Records in a different format to the March 2011 Firmware
    -Has single channel line
    -Openbox S10 based firmware
-Sky card works and can decode encrypted channels
-Overall: Not recommended due to lip sync issues

Firmware still recommended: March 2011 Firmware (See above)

Feel free to try any of these firmwares, but standard disclaimer applies - i.e do so at your own risk.

In my opinion, the best and most stable firmware I have tested so far has been the March 2011 firmware (CONM_CHDS2_CMT_SkyBox.abs) - Thanks to DX User 'sadguru' who found this firmware and linked to it on the 'Real or clone' topic. This firmware has had the least issues for me, with hardly any lip sync problems, can record and playback easily, and a Sky card will work and unscramble the Sky channels. Contrary to what sadguru said, my remote control still works for powering the box off and on again, so maybe that was an isolated issue?

Testing is stil ongoing, and feel free to report your experiences on these firmwares, or other firmwares that you have found.

    Thanks a lot man...

Your topic is really a mandatory read to openbox owners.

Even with all your explanation I don't feel confident to change the original FW that came with my box... It is working just perect with Twin Y6/Y4 protocol...

    Anyway, thanks for your research.

Thanks, I have just tested the following firmware that you mentioned:

    ONPENBOX_S10_110902.abs - 02/09/2011

Notes: Shows a ChipID of 'FFFF' and will kill the box when rebooted, I reflashed the safe firmware before this happened though.

After continued testing of the March 2011 firmware, it seems that there is no way to playback video files other than the recordings made by the box, whereas on the later firmwares there seems to be a different menu that allows you to select various video files, I will have to test further and see what video formats it will play, other than its own recordings. Also, I had set 3 recordings on the timer last night, and only 2 of them recorded successfully, there was no record of the third program. All the recordings were set to record the same channel. I will see if I can replicate the issue again, as it might have been my error in setting up the timer!

Great topic, man ! Thx for all the info. It's great that the power button works for you ! Works even in the front panel? This sugests my S10 was from a differret batch..

I am using this receiver with a dongle called SMBOX (SM1) connected by rs232. Works great here in Brazil ! Nothing better for this price range..

    See ya !
