Laser quickly dims

  • bosoko Monday, October 3, 2011 9:50 AM Reply
I have a true 50mW green laser, and recently it stopped working properly. When I press the button, it flashes at full brightness for a fraction of a second, then dims a lot, and then brightens up a bit, but not nearly to the full brightness (I can't see the beam anymore). When I press the button again, it does the same thing. The button is fine, I even changed it once. I've tried a bunch of new batteries and I've tried cleaning the metal contacts.

Is it approaching the end of it's life?

Well, I opened it up and found that one of the legs coming from the diode was almost torn off the board, and by pressing the button I was almost disconnecting it leaving only a tiny connection. I soldered a wire straight to the transistor leg and now it's working. After taking the pic, I put some tape around the wire so it wouldn't touch any walls.

Also, while I was there, I changed the button as for a long time I had to press it at a certain angle to work.

    Interesting.
Mine does something similar. I press the button and it will work for 5 minutes of usage, then it dims like yours. I go to my battery tester and its between the green and yellow zone. I try this with many batteries as well but I'm basically having the same problem as you now. I wonder why. Sucks they took lasers over 5mW off DX.
