  • Nice display, some assembly required

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:

Price, obviously. Very decent, given the capabilities of the display. The display has contrast pot soldered in and it's very nice for the prototyping work. It's quite bulky, though, so I will use it mostly to test my code before moving to slimmer/smaller display for the final product.

    Cons:

The piece I received was hard-soldered into paralel mode by shorting PSB pin to VDD (+5V). When I attemted to switch the LCD to serial mode, I effectively shorted +5V to GND and shut down both the LCD and the controller. :(
Some other display versions have jumper for the connection; mine was shorted with 0-ohm resistor R9. After I desoldered it, everything worked as it should.

    OtherThoughts:

Aside from the no-documentation (which is kind of standard) and the nasty surprise with the PSB pin, it's a very nice piece of HW.

    Bottomline:

Hope this review helps somebody else to get the setup right right from the bat.
