Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:

Great price, very capable! This radio has long battery life (I leave it on all day and the battery barely goes down) and feels rugged in the hand. Unlocked transmit capability, so it can be used for 2m/70cm, MARS, police, fire, FRS/GMRS and marine bands.

The drop-in charger is a nice bonus. I don't think Yaesu or Icom throw that kind of thing in.

Also: It receives FM broadcast! Not like there's anything worth listening to on there anymore.

    Cons:

Don't try programming it with the keypad. You will want a programming cable.

Also, the programming software that comes with it is TERRIBLE. Happily, you can get the free CHIRP software which is amazing!

Doesn't have a dedicated knob for squelch.

    OtherThoughts:

The radio scans about three frequencies a second, but it's not really meant to be a scanner- just a radio with a scan function.

I would highly recommend this radio over the UV-3r, because it has a real knob to control power volume and the keypad does come in handy when changing settings on the fly.

    Bottomline:

You could spend four times as much on an Icom or Yaesu, but unless you've got tons of money, it's not worth it.
