  • Good idea for new laptops with only 100Mbit

Excellent for newer laptops lacking gigabit Ethernet. Works best with Windows. Windows 7 backup time almost halved over the network when compared to regular fast Ethernet.

It does get a little warm. Speed is limited by the speed of the USB bus, so you don't get the maximum theoretical benefit. It's still a lot faster than the fast Ethernet included in my laptop.

My laptop has a "Crab Card" as built-in Ethernet card. Fast Ethernet Crab Cards are notoriously slow. So you may not see as big as a performance jump with a chipset like Atheros/Assantic.

My adapter was based on the common ASIX chipset with ample driver support ready for download and plenty of in-depth documentation. It seems to be based on one of their reference designs (I think this is a good thing) so it's been tested much more extensively than some OEM customisations.
