Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:

    Stainless steel.

    Very nice finish.

Very bright, even with NIMH batts.

    Excellent implementation of mode memory.

    Good choice of levels.

    Cons:

Contact problems in head and tail due to bad design.

Mode arrangement is opposit of what I expect.

    Not the most efficient driver.

Body tube is a little too short for protected 14500 batts. Still useable, but shows gaps.

Gets too hot to hold after running high with 14500 batt.

    OtherThoughts:

Finally they implemented the mode memory correctly. At any time while the light is on, tap the switch to change mode. Turn on after it's been off for more than 1 second, it will use same mode as when it was turned off from.

The contact problem in the head is caused by the thick o-ring in front of the lens and the uneven soldering. Too tight, the o-ring pops out. Too loose, bad contact.

The contact problem in the tail is caused by the use of tail spring that's too hard and the use of a soft disc that sits between the switch and the rubber cap. Too much tension on the spring will push the switch away from the metal ring that provides contact between the switch and the body.

The mode arrangement is Hi/Mid/Lo/Strobe/SOS. Think about it. While you're outside and you want to switch mode, you usually want it brighter quickly so that you don't miss seeing anything. But with this arrangement you have to tap the switch 3 to 4 times to make it brighter.

    Bottomline:

High with NIMH is brighter than the high on the Akoray using NIMH batt. The light will dim through out the life of the battery. With a 2000ma NIMH batt, runtime on high is about 1 hour, and about 2 hours and 15 minutes on mid. I didn't time the low, but it should be more than 10 hours.

The beam is a little wider than that of the Akoray 1xAA. On the wall, you see a slight ring around the hot spot, but not noticeable in real use.

Nice light, but be ready to fix some contact problems.
