  • The 'safest' tool to strip Cat5 cables

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:

Well made, rugged plastic. This is arguably the best tool to strip away a Cat5/6 jacket without risking nicking the inner conductors, provided you're careful not to "overturn."

    Cons:

According to an IT friend who goes through a dozen of these every month, the blade tends to get dull rapidly, requiring you to adjust the number of turns needed for a proper strip. You need to be careful with how many turns you use, too many and you risk nicking the inner wiring, too few and the outer jacket won't break when you pull.

    OtherThoughts:

These sell for quite a bit more in stores. And as near as I can tell, the ones sold here are identical, except maybe for the color. The "punch tool" tip is there for completeness' sake, though you'd probably be better off getting a dedicated impact punch tool.

    Bottomline:

I'll probably end up getting the 3-pack very soon. :)
