The tip isn't sharp but it's pointed enough to make poking into meats relatively easy. I bought two of them and when used together, they show very little variation in the temperatures - around 0.5 C - close enough for my needs.
The probe is a little short and there's no metallic clip to stick the thermometer onto the side of a pan.
As one of the other reviewers noted, the probe is a little slow in getting up to the right temperature range but I offset this by "priming" the probe before turning it on - I warm it or chill it before using it. It's not a perfect solution but then again I'm not going to complain too much over a US$ 5 probe thermometer.
A nice buy but don't expect it to be quick. My favorite use for it so far is making homemade yogurt - I've made it perfectly three times so far thanks to proper temperature control.
