  • Superb Digital Scale for Kitchen, Shop & Mailings

    posted by videlicet on 09/15/2007

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

This digital scale is remarkably sturdy, as it seems to have survived intact being delivered in a fairly strong cardboard box within a bubble wrap envelope that failed to prevent that box being seriously crushed in transit. This scale is well designed: tidy appearance; compact, with retractable control panel, allows small footprint, easy portability and storage; very useful 2000 g range (which can be effectively extended as described below); sensitive 1/10 g resolution; has the most useful weight units; has all needed calibration and tare modes requiring few key strokes; the scale platform cover easily holds the user manual besides serving as a ready tray to hold weighed items that might tend to roll off the scale's weighing platform.

    No really serious cons, though
there is no calibration weight (and the scale platform cover in this use is only 26.4 g, which is too small to represent a substantial portion of the total 2000 g range)--so any calibration remedy is left to the user. Further, no experience with long term operation is available to this reviewer.

The effective range can be extended well beyond the basic 2000 g limit of an individual weighing. For example, when mailing a package that will likely exceed 2000 g, don't wait until the package is ready to go out the door to think of weighing it. Instead, add the weights from weighings made as separately as possible for the mailing container, all packing and wrapping materials, and the items to be mailed. In order to weigh a single item of less than about 3x the 2000 g limit, locate 3 fairly well separated points on the item which together can support the total weight of the item. Then, using a cone (or pyramid or such) at each located point to support the weight at that point above a stable base, successively weigh the weight on each of 3 cones, and total the results of the 3 weighings. [Verifying this procedure using an item weighing less than 2000 g is strongly advised, in order to make clear just how effective--and easy(!)--this method actually can be.]

This digital scale is a superbly useful digital weighing machine, providing an excellent complement of features at a most reasonable cost.
