I bought this to experiment with circadian rhythms in a diurnal cycle. i.e. exposure to red light instead of white light is more 'natural' and makes you go to sleep faster and sleep more soundly.
It works great at this. I usually read for a few hours in bed before sleep, and using this light I can usually last only an hour before I get incredibly tired and ready to sleep, so it works very well.
It's quite bright, somewhat close to a 25W incandescent, but with greater fall-off further away, so overall quite dim but fine for reading or any close task. The only downside is that your eyes/brain eventually start to filter out the redness, so if you go back into white light, everything looks blue or green tinted until you readjust again.
Build quality seems ok. Bulb does generate some heat in a downward-facing metal shade, but not excessive.
