This module is an extremely easy way to learn home automation with an ESP8266 without the need to build any hardware. The programming pins are easy to access, I used dx.com/p/310801 as the programmer (in 3.3v mode). See randomnerdtutorials.com/how-to-flash-a-custom-firmware-to-sonoff/
I have tested with NodeMCU Lua, works very well. See nodemcu.readthedocs.io/en/master/en/flash/
I have successfully loaded FauxMo to allow direct integration with Alexa. This allows commands such as "Alexa, turn on the lamp". See http://blog.kilomon.com/2018/02/hacking-sonoff-wifi-switch-part-3-alexa.html
Note that FauxMo will only work with the esp8266 Arduino library version 2.3.0. For some reason, version 2.4.0 does not work, this is a problem with the software, not with the hardware.
Note that I immediately deleted the factory-included software, so I can't give an opinion on this.
