Inexpensive and quite understated it does it claims for. It has a handy chain and ring to hang it on your zip buckle. It is also equipped with a swing out magnifier. Thermometer is accurate.
Construction isn't the very best, the integrated magnifying glass tends to flip out by itself if you hang it upside down (not that you'd do it often since it'll probably be hung and remain there). The main complaint regards the whistle which is certainly loud enough and of a very high frequency but also needs a very good stream of air flowing from your lungs before it produces any audible sound. Being a survival whistle means that you'd probably need to whiz it where you could not be on your best physical condition (i.e. a bit breathless) say in a gully with some broken bone. How much you don't want that to happen to see if you'll live up to the expectations ?
The good thing to notice is the compass in this item is a very nice spirit frictioned unit that's accurate if a bit slow and doesn't get stuck. There is bubble inside the size of a letter but that doesn't seem to affect its usability, it is the norm perhaps. Even the thermometer, although a very basic red fluid filled unit is accurate at room temperature, and easy to read with white on black scales for both °C and °F. The magnifier is a bit of joke in terms of size, material and construction, but anyway it is there nonetheless.
Nice piece. I'd probably buy a good stock of these for a group or even to give to every family member.
