I use it as soldering flux solved in isopropyl alcohol.
It can also be used to protect PCB from oxidation. For this I just dissolved as much colophonium in the alcohol as possible. After covering the PCB with this, it dries within 1 - 2 days to a glass-like, solderable cover.
It's not too easy to get it out of the paper box. But that's the only con.
It dissolves very easy when you put the bottle with the alcohol and colophonium in a bath of hot wather for fast use or if you need a higher concentration (like for covering PCB as protection).
To clean fingers or cloths from colophonium, just use some alcohol - but especially in cloths, it's not easy to clean.
