Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:

Much less expensive than buying premade flux. You can control the recipe exactly to get just what you want. Just the thing for populating home-brew surface mount pc boards.

    Cons:

This is about 20 grams of rosin, so when you add 30CC alcohol you get only enough flux for small projects. I would be interested in larger blocks of rosin, perhaps 500 grams to 1 Kg., At a lower price per gram.

    OtherThoughts:

To crush the block of rosin for dissolving, I put it inside a plastic bag and crush it in an arbor press. You could also probably crush it in a vice. Don't just bash it with a hammer out in the open, you will notice the rosin dust when you breath if you do. You can also add 2% glycerine to the 30cc alcohol to make the flux easier to clean off.

A Google patent search (Google patents) for expired US patent 3,730,782 gives the proportions to use. Do not heat the rosin when you dissolve in the alcohol, just let it sit for 3 days. Heating will reduce the efficiency of the flux. The paper box surrounding the rosin comes off easily after crushing.

    Bottomline:

    Great! Thank you.
