  • Essential...erm...if you need it.

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:

-- Allows you to power a SATA drive when your PSU has only Molex connectors.
-- Also functions as a short extension lead.

    Cons:

-- None really, though if your case is small, or the distance between PSU and drive is short, as it is in my Antec P180, you end up with more wire than you'd ideally like.

    Bottomline:

If you have a perfectly decent PSU that you don't want to upgrade, but yet you want to install SATA drives, you don't have much choice. That's why this is essential, because there's no other way to make it work. If on the other hand, your PSU is in need of upgrade too, then any modern unit should have plenty of SATA power connectors.
