Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:

    -Very bright!

    -Smooth zoom function

    -Smooth dimmer works great!

-Very small and light for the power and versatility

-Single LED source covers all lighting requirements from super-bright spot to low-intensity flood for reading

-Good construction quality in most regards

-Single on-off clickie is VERY nice, no cycling through modes, and excellent position under light.

-Long battery life (about 3 hours)

-Has endured two good rain storms without problems

    Cons:

-Strap around head too short (strap over top is fine)

    -Uncomfortable against forehead

-Beam pattern great (smooth, no dark patches) from full zoom to about 1/2 flood, but then a dark area develops in the centre. Not too bad, and doesn't interfere with reading or cooking in the dark, but a little annoying.

-Light swivels down for close-up, but the clicks are way to coarse-- only about 3 settings from horizontal to straight down. Need finer clicks (more settings)

-The hinge is made of small plastic tabs... on other Deal Extreme headlights, the plastic hinges have broken; these look similar and might crack off within a year or so.

    OtherThoughts:

Overall, I'm thrilled with this light.

    USEFUL MODS:

    1. Sew on 10 cm of extra elastic to make the headband large enough

    2. Glue some contoured foam inside the headlight to make it more comfortable against the forehead. Once I did both of these mods, it's very comfortable for extended periods.

    3. Beef up the outer two hinge flanges with epoxy, being careful not to glue the hinge tight. This might take some of the strain off the hinge flanges and increase their longevity. The manufacturer should study the hinges on Petzl headlamps, which last forever, and should make them out of glass-impregnated plastic.

    Bottomline:

Good price on a good headlamp that is great with a few mods.
