  • A good device

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:

Good sensitivity. I’m able to pick up aviation band voice transmissions and decode ACARS at up to 350 km distance. Economical.

    Cons:

Case is cheap. It came open spontaneously, althogh easy to clip back together. The one I received had a Fitipower FC0013 tuner. This works very well from about 50 MHz to 950 MHz, but does not have the range of the E4000 tuner. I’m not able to receive ADS-B transmissions on 1090 MHz, so I’ve purchased another dongle with the R820T for that purpose. It has a PAL connector, so you’ll need an adapter to use F-type or other typical connectors used in North America.

    OtherThoughts:

I’ve used this device with SDR#, GnuRadio, and Planeplotter (ACARS).

    Bottomline:

In general a good device to use as an introduction to Software Defined Radio, just be aware it may not be able to pick up anything above 950 MHz or so.
