Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month
Went through NINE projects with it already and tested about everything - it is 100% Mega compatible with all those extra pin-out. Mega extra IO makes creating new digital projects a dream.
No cons that I can find so far. It just works and keep on working.
Powered mostly via USB - from the PC that is used to program the device. Recently powered directly via the DC jack with a 12V 2A switching - and it continues to work like a champ.
If you are low on budget but high on ambition, this version of Mega will go a long long way for you. Team it with a prototype shield - I like the standard (less expensive) Arduino shield instead of the Mega-shield.
