Simple but effective – Maneki Neko Lucky Cat Wireless IR Motion Sensor Electronic Welcome Guest Doorbell - White (3 x AAA) Reviews

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

Pros:
Cheap, loud. Triggers around 3m indoors. Two greetings: English and Chinese. Uses 3 AAA's.
Cons:
Limited range (1m) outdoors -- may be fooled by sunlight but not sure exactly.
Other:
This is a simple photocell that triggers when a warm body is within 1-3m. It's not balanced for daylight, but it works well indoors. I was hoping to put this on our front porch to keep away drug dealers, but it doesn't trigger well there (1m max). I have it disassembled now to trigger it with an Arduino and an ultrasonic distance sensor. It's an easy circuit to figure out and the photocell is reusable for other projects.
Bottomline:
This seems fine for normal applications. My indoor tests were all successful, and the only false trigger there was when sun fell on it suddenly.
