Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week
*identical to original laser
*relatively easy to install
*can bring an old ps2 back from the dead
*requires additional materials to install
*may not work with all ps2 slim models
i had an old ps2 slim (model no. scph 700012) that was giving me the infamous disc read error, so it had been sitting in a drawer for over a year. however, there are so many awesome games for the ps2, i thought about getting another one. i found this laser for sale and decided to order it. it took less than 15 minutes to install, and when i turned the ps2 on, it worked! it's a pretty good feeling!
also, there is an anti-static point that must be removed from the laser with a soldering iron and some desoldering wick (available from DX as SKU 22264 and SKU 6238 respectively, costs less than seven dollars for both). this isn't terribly difficult, and information on how to do this is available elsewhere on the web.
if your ps2 slim is giving you a disc read error, consider installing one of these. it's far cheaper than buying a new ps2, and still cheaper than buying a secondhand ps2. i'm glad i decided to buy this, i might even buy a spare.
