Efficient and robust FP5138 boost driver

posted by desolder on 05/27/2011 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
This is a boost driver for when you need to increase your battery's voltage in order to drive multiple LEDs in series. I am using it to drive 3x sku.4516, for a total output voltage of 19.8V. The power source is six 18650's wired as 3S2P (11.1V). This is fo...
    Cons:
This is a much larger driver than most typical flashlight drivers, so be sure it will fit in your project. It gets very warm, s...

    Boost Driver

posted by chrishh777 on 09/06/2010 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
This is one of the few boost drivers on sale. I prefer boost drivers because generally they allow the use of higher capacity 18650 batteries in place of 16340 batteries. This is a CC driver so should, in theory, work with less than 5 LEDs in series - provid...
    Cons:
Others have reported that the driver gets quite hot.

    Simply too hot!

posted by littlegiant on 07/20/2010 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:less than 1 day

    Pros:
Good Price Easy to use 5 mode Able to handle 2 li-ion cells
    Cons:
NO memory Simply too hot. Low Efficiency of 67.5%. 7.4V input (8.6W) only results in 1.845A @ 3.15V output (5.81W). This means...

Better than I thought it would be.

posted by Forgiven on 03/31/2010 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Driver seems to be well built. Its very easy to use, and on 6 nimh cells it drives 5 XRE R2s well. It was brighter than I thought it would be on high.
    Cons:
    Strobe and SOS

    useful driver

posted by googy on 09/15/2009 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
The only driver on DX capable driving 4-5 LEDs in series from 5 - 8.4V. 800mA are better then 1000mA, because of 15W power, 80% efficiency and no thermal management
    Cons:
no thermal management (except the coil) driver is getting warm-hot
