Good Remote – Super Compact Media Center IR Remote Controller with USB Receiver Reviews

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

Pros:
-Very small and light, but not to small. You can use it without pushing 2 buttons at the same time.
-40 buttons, 38 are programmable, 2 are fixed (the Mediacenter and Turn-Off button)
-Battery included (CR2025)
-Cheap, most proper remotes start at ~$20
-USB, pretty usefull, because modern motherboards don't have a serial connector.
-IR Range is pretty good. (I can reach 5m if aimed well)
Cons:
-The cable from the usb-connector to the reciever is very thin and fragile
-Buttons are not mapable, the PC sees them as a key-combo, for example: the play button is crtl-shift-p
-The software at the CD is pretty useless and it's illegal.
-Manual is pretty useless, not much relevant information in it.
Other:
I use it with Mediaportal, this is a free program which turns your normal XP PC into a mediacenter.
Standard, this controller won't work with Mediaportal, but if you download the "Keyboard Input Plugin" for Mediaportal and you remap the keys, you can give 38 of the 40 buttons at the remote the function you want.
Bottomline:
Looking for a cheap, controlled mediacenter? Buy this remote and download Mediaportal.
