    Great for the car

posted by Criggie on 12/27/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
Its great at keeping a kid amused if we're waiting in the car. Ours is stored, when needed it connects to a cheap MP3 amp and a small 3.5" screen which are mounted in the dashboard (see photo)
    Cons:
Personally I can't stand these things, but those of single digit ages can. There is no multiplayer, its take turns or nothing....

    hackable!

posted by Criggie on 12/27/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
Robust, cheap, flexible and forgiving. No speakers is a win because there's no way any could be effectively installed inside this casing. No remote control is great too because they always walk off. Only four little screws hold it together, so it was eas...
    Cons:
None so far... the resolution is pretty low, but that's all part of the price. Someday I'll replace it with a higher resolu...

    Excellent value for money

posted by Criggie on 12/27/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
Its small and so far has survived rain and snow. Also the camera lens hasn't moved despite bumps etc. And its so jolly small that people don't notice it as a camera, and assume its a light or something. Its got good white balance and can illuminate dusk ...
    Cons:
The image isn't great, and the wide-angle means distortion. You can't reasonably see anything over 10 metres from the camera ...

    Works perfectly

posted by Criggie on 11/29/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
I bought this for my boy's mountain bike, because he kept getting a wet backside while cycling. It straps onto the seat pole at the back and stops the flick up muck off the road. The front one fastens to the front forks and does the same for gunk off the ...
    Cons:
The seat post was a bit smaller than the clamp's minimum size. Nothing a bit of rim tape couldn't fix. The two clamps on the ...

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
I've hacked one of these up in the past to use inside a car camera project. Works fine. Plugs are 2.1mm standard for cameras and 12V appliances.
    Cons:
The shield is not a braid, its just another set of strands down between the two layers of insulator. Works fine though. Not s...

    Wonderful wee heatsinks

posted by Criggie on 11/29/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
They simply stick onto ICs which might otherwise get a bit hot. You can also butt two or more of them together to make a longer heatsink for funny-shaped things.
    Cons:
They're electrically conductive so if they fall off theres a danger of shorting something. I had a couple which were on some v...

    The Good Oil

posted by Criggie on 11/29/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
Its oil - nice and slippery and good at making things slide. I use it on all sorts of bike repairs. It has a good tendancy to creep inside things. Works well drizzled on a chain
    Cons:
Possibly a bit too runny for what it is. I've got no idea whats actually inside the bottle, so if you have a valuable, rare or...

    Nice but....

posted by Criggie on 07/21/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
I like the idea - I've tried putting a regular small torch on the dog and he doesn't like it. This thing is small enough to avoid notice completely.
    Cons:
Red and White are fine, but blue lights are supposed to be restricted to the police here in New Zealand. I'll crack one open ...

    Works fine

posted by Criggie on 07/21/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
It does what its supposed to (this really is a pro when it comes to some DX items!)
    Cons:
Its not a multipurpose tool - this thing is good for opening stuff only. It might make a workable flathead screwdriver in a ...

    Small, light, slowish, good enough

posted by Criggie on 07/21/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Its small and light and actually cuts reasonably well. While its not as quick as a bowsaw its quick enough. There are 3 pictures uploaded of me cutting a 10cm / 4" plum tree limb, and it took a total of 34 pulls on each side (68 pulls total) until th...
    Cons:
Its not a chainsaw chain, its more like a small bicycle chain with cutting teeth on every third link. So there are 11 cutting...
