Alternative to a dedicated bike light.

posted by Diceman_ on 04/21/2008 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
Simple design Cheap Can use your bright torches as a headlight.
    Cons:
Fixed size, too big for barrel of AA torches. Can't get a tight fit over handlebars without breaking. No washers on either end...

    Good monocular, great magnifier

posted by Diceman_ on 03/09/2008 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Doubles as a low-power microscope. I can see much more detail than I can with the lenses/loupes I was using previously. Also a lot easier to get light on the object as the lens is well clear of the object. Lightweight monocular, similar performance to my 8x...
    Cons:
Lens came off with microscope attachment, not very firmly held in place. Strong, possibly toxic fumes given off by rubber (will...

Good design let down by poor build quality

posted by Diceman_ on 03/05/2008 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Uses AA's. Floody light pattern. Really cheap.
    Cons:
Awful build quality, a burr in the battery holder tube makes the battery holder difficult to insert and remove. When I first pu...

    Looks better than it performs

posted by Diceman_ on 03/01/2008 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
Inexpensive. Metal on two of the three surfaces, probably less prone to crushing and chipping than an all-plastic compass.
    Cons:
Needle sensitive to movement, takes a while to settle down. Needle not level so compass needs to be tilted at an angle for maxi...

    Good frequency range

posted by Diceman_ on 12/22/2007 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
Good audio quality for price. Decent cord length. Look expensive. Three sizes of caps (pink, clear, blue), the blue turn sku.33 into useful earphones.
    Cons:
Tight fit on caps, tore the black lining on one speaker when switching. Tend to fall out when chewing or moving around.

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Good asking price. Goes well with a silver or grey torch. The average Joe could probably fit four torches with these.
    Cons:
    Some customisation required.

    More analysis needed

posted by Diceman_ on 12/22/2007 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
Great in concept. Comes with (barely long enough) wrist strap. Can also be hung from your pocket
    Cons:
Effectiveness ambiguous at best. Wouldn't be mistaken for a watch.

Very useful for rechargeable mp3 players

posted by Diceman_ on 12/22/2007 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
Frees you from having to rely on your computer at home to recharge your mp3 player. Low price.
    Cons:
Not sure if it's well built enough to withstand being kept in car during summer.

    Works

posted by Diceman_ on 12/22/2007 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
Far cheaper than offerings from local electronics shops. Works (barely).
    Cons:
I think a 2m cord is needed for comfortable use. Connection not very reliable.

    General-use FM transmitter

posted by Diceman_ on 12/20/2007 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Can be used on any radio. Can charge up your mp3 player via USB port when cigarette lighter power lead is connected.
    Cons:
Audio quality is not as good as a CD player (same may apply to all FM transmitters), also a little quiet. Needs to be in the ri...
