    Nice for own projects

posted by DrJones on 03/04/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Nice module with a nice LED driver. Comes with an ATmega8 just waiting to be programmed by you. Includes an ISP header. There are spots on the board to add several components like a temperature sensor or a battery buffered real time clock. Three buttons.
    Cons:
The original clock software is a matter of taste, but the date display with chinese symbols is a con for most. Bought it for pr...

    Great thrower

posted by DrJones on 11/19/2011 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
This is a great thrower. It's big reflector and good driver give it great throw. And it's total light output is higher than that of most XM-L light I have (and I have quite some). Spot intensity: 52kcd; Throw: 460m (NEMA) Can tailstand, has a forward cli...
    Cons:
Quite long, due to 2*18650. Noticeable PWM on low/mid modes. Both mode groups include strobe... especially with the forward c...

    18650 fits

posted by DrJones on 09/21/2011 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
As the others say, it's big. The biggest pro for me is: It has a perfect size to hold an 18650 Li-ion battery and it's water tight. If you are on an outdoor tour, this might be a good container for your spare battery. A TrustFire Flame 18650 (sku.20392) fit...
    Cons:
As the others say, it's big... Too big for actual keychain use. The thread quality could be better.

    Reasonable compact XM-L light

posted by DrJones on 06/14/2011 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Mine came with a regulated 1.4A linear driver and thus draws about 5W (XM-L is specified up to 10W) - that's a good thing though, since a P60 drop-in light clearly isn't suited for more, so this is a reasonable choice and less prone for thermal suicide. Mod...
    Cons:
    Anodization could be better.

    320mAh - nice!

posted by DrJones on 05/30/2010 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
These batteries have ~325mAh, measured at a discharge current of 300mA (~1C), and perform equally well at even higher currents (~320mAh @ 700mA/~2C). So these are the best 10440s I know of.
    Cons:
Protected 10440s in general are a bit bigger than the unprotected ones, they might not fit in some flashlights. You should chec...

    Good buck driver

posted by DrJones on 04/18/2010 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
It is a good buck driver. Whenever you want to drive one LED with two or more cells (or some other voltage source up to 18V) and no modes, this one is for you. Efficiency is ~80%; Drives the LED at 1.2A. Might even drive multiple LEDs in series (I tried ...
    Cons:
Not a boost driver. Input voltage should be ~0.7V higher than LED voltage, or the current goes down significantly. So it's not ...

    small

posted by DrJones on 12/30/2009 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
good brightness for the size small and lightweight small enough to hold in your mouth for a while (well, sometimes one needs that...:) low price (check bulk rates, too!)
    Cons:
Compared to the Trustfire XP-EF23 (SKU 24291) it's lower quality, much dimmer, twist-operated, 1-mode only and 2mm thicker; on ...

    I like it.

posted by DrJones on 12/29/2009 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
It's compact. It's bright, mine has 43mW output on a fresh battery. The two gratings (one turnable) produce a nice pattern. Gratings are removable. Comes in a nice case. Cheap.
    Cons:
Battery drains fast. Mine could have been a bit better collimated (but that would make it even more dangerous). Battery drains ...

    Nice... :)

posted by DrJones on 12/29/2009 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Power... Mine has 110mW on fresh batteries :) Burns *various* color plastic, matches, paper etc, pops balloons fast. (Note that burning etc requires additional focusing.) Try thermal paper for some fun :) And of course the cool color. And the fluorescence o...
    Cons:
Not bright, due to the low visibility of that wavelength (0,5% compared to green, photopic), spot visibility is comparable to 1...

    nice&bright

posted by DrJones on 12/29/2009 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Now that is a cool little AAA flashlight! Steel casing, good 3-mode-memory-clickie with glow-in-the-dark tailcap, and I especially like the glow-in-the-dark front o-ring! And of course the brightness.
    Cons:
No big cons... I'd prefer it without that golden ring in the middle. People with very dry hands perhaps would prefer a textur...
