    Big handy bag

posted by GeeJiiZet on 01/15/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
It's spacious, can fit lots of stuff inside. The reflecting rims on sides and back work great and are good for dark winters here up north. Comes with shoulder carrying strap so you can detach it from your bike and carry with you easily if needed.
    Cons:
While the attachment to bike rack is powerful, it's not possible to tighten it up properly to prevent it jumping on bumpy road,...

Powerful, uneven spot, near-UV laser pointer

posted by GeeJiiZet on 01/15/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
The purple wavelength 405 nm is exciting, many friends had never seen anything like it. And it is powerful, the page says it is 5 mW, the pointer itself reads "< 5 mW max", but measured it at 30 mW in optical laboratory.
    Cons:
Since wavelength 405 nm is quite at the limit of human eye's sensitivity, the laser doesn't look as bright as it really is. Eve...

    Cheap USB connectors

posted by GeeJiiZet on 12/14/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Quite cheap with only about 0.12 USD a piece, but they work fine and can be soldered to any standard dot matrix prototyping circuit boards.
    Cons:
The legs are short. They can be bent from the plastic cover easily, which makes them easier to solder in, but also points that ...

    USB Host Shield for Arduino

posted by GeeJiiZet on 12/14/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
This is the revised version of the USB Shield, using more powerful communication interface and works by just attaching it on top of your Arduino board. The example libraries work, for example you can plug a USB mouse and read the movement and button presses...
    Cons:
Price is a bit too high for the components it is built from.

    Bright RGB LED

posted by GeeJiiZet on 12/14/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
It's bright and all three LEDs in it can be controlled separately. For example when using Arduino, it can be directly powered from the PWM pins with no extra components. The diodes also start emitting at quite low voltages, so there is good range for adjust...
    Cons:
The different colors don't have equal voltage/brightness response. So if you want to have accurately controlled color changes w...

    Female-female wires

posted by GeeJiiZet on 12/14/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
Different colors, attached together with easy detaching, so you can store them in nicely and then just take single wires or ribbons of several wires together as you need them.
    Cons:
    Only one length, 30 cm.

    Your benefit

posted by GeeJiiZet on 12/14/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
It costs 9.99 but potentially gives you 60 USD worth of discounts next year. So that's 50.10 USD potential savings. On top of that you get next year's calendar, pictures of DX's girls, and mine also came with a sheet of DX stickers and small notepad beside.
    Cons:
Months have two presentations and they will fold to different sides of the calendar, so you have to choose which one you would ...

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
It's so simple that it can't go wrong. And considering some products that come with DC adapter from DealExtreme contain flat plug end, but tolerate input from 100 to 230 AC, this cheap converter is very handy.
    Cons:
Can be a bit tight, making detaching difficult. On the other hand, that could also be a positive thing.

    Good basic webcam

posted by GeeJiiZet on 12/14/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
Light weight, foldable structure and retractable USB cable makes it easy to carry with you. The image quality is better than in some more expensive VGA-resolution webcams, even in darker enviornments. Plug-and-play use in Windows 7 and Linux, no need for ex...
    Cons:
The USB cable is too short to give proper freedom in placing the webcam where you would want it. A wired USB hub can migitate t...

    Small, handy USB hub

posted by GeeJiiZet on 12/14/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
It's small and lightweight, still feeling quite sturdy. Comes with a nice looking Micro-USB cable for plugging it into a computer or other host. As with any USB hub, it works plug-and-play. It also has DC input for external 5V power supply in case you want ...
    Cons:
Does not come with the DC adapter, and the DC jack is a bit smaller than most common DC plugs here.
