Strong continuous rotation servo with many horns

posted by KyleS on 03/10/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Continuous rotation servos, no modifications necessary! Reasonable torque, not the highest. Reasonable speed, again, not the fastest. Came with many horns. Both of mine came with a smaller and larger circular horn, as well as those pictured.
    Cons:
Pretty sure these have all nylon gears, so pushing these to their max speed under load, fast changes of direction, etc, will pr...

Good for small objects within a meter, large for maybe 2-3m

posted by KyleS on 03/10/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Small, well built, precise, incredibly cheap for what it is.
    Cons:
Two pins to operate instead of one, inaccurate (but since it's precise, that's correctable), no data sheet

    Cheap, useful, BRIGHT backlight

posted by KyleS on 09/29/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:less than 1 day

    Pros:
It's cheap. The header pins are well soldered. The back light is VERY bright (even with 3v, do not give it 5, you'll burn it out) It can be run at very low voltage: I'm running at 3v, some people have reported running as low as 2V! Everything but the li...
    Cons:
Everything but the light is software controlled. If you want to adjust anything, even the contrast, it needs to be done in sof...

posted by KyleS on 07/21/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
It works It's cheap Temperature and humidity readings are reasonably stable and precise.
    Cons:
Sensor is inaccurate, you need to calibrate it in your code. Slow to respond to changes in environment. Small range of sensit...

Bluetooth serial for any micro-controller project

posted by KyleS on 07/21/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
Very small board. Pins already connected (no soldering necessary) Comes with connection cable Has a protective sheathing around the board.
    Cons:
No spec sheet, link to spec sheet, or other information. Can you change the pin code for connecting? No idea, we don't have t...

Cheap sensor, great bang for the buck

posted by KyleS on 07/15/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
It's mounted to a PCB, has a pull-up resistor. This means less wear-and-tear on the sensor if you move it between projects, and the pull-up means no hunting for the right resistor (OK, that part doesn't take much hunting, but still).
    Cons:
The sensor on here is known to be slow & low accuracy, so it's intended for data-loggers and the like. There are no specs ...

Works well for non-pwm protocol vehicles

posted by KyleS on 05/17/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
Well built, easy to pair with devices, lights tell you if it's powered up and transmitting. Exposes a ton of data about the vehicle it's connected to (unless it's a PWM protocol speaking vehicle, see cons)
    Cons:
For vehicles that speak PWM protocols, this sometimes works, sometimes doesn't (even on the same vehicle), but even when it doe...

    Good replacement battery

posted by KyleS on 04/23/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Virtually indistinguishable from the battery that came with my Samsung phone. Charges well, holds it's charge about as well as the original battery did when new (which is WAY better than what the original battery does now).
    Cons:
    None.

Works in windows, not in Linux

posted by KyleS on 03/27/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
It works in Windows 7, and apparently finds drivers automatically, so no worries about needing the included CD.
    Cons:
It gets hot. Not burn yourself or smoke hot, but still quite warm. It draws more power than the USB spec says it should, whic...

Very cute, but too big for a child's wrist

posted by KyleS on 03/07/2011 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
It's very cute, and well made. There are no burrs or sharp edges. The "crystals" are set well, no worry about them falling out. The paint job and face of the watch are prefect. The bracelet is spring loaded, to comfortably fit a variety of wrist sizes.
    Cons:
...and the bracelet is where the cons start. It's just too big for children. My three year old was so happy when I gave it to...
