Shame about the bright blue LED lighting

posted by QuackingPlums on 03/10/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Four ports, 2.1A total output, 500mA per port if all four in use. Seems to supply more if using less (it charges my iPad fine without the annoying "not charging" message) but doesn't state anywhere that this is the case.
    Cons:
Bright blue LED lighting that surrounds the four USB ports is a little distracting. It makes the product look a little cheap in...

    Ideal for homebrew projects

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Good range of metal film resistors in hand-labelled strips. Ideal for all those Raspberry Pi, Arduino, etc. tutorials where they always seem to tell you to use the exact resistor you don't have!
    Cons:
Whilst the range is good you're not going to get a full series with just 20 values. It's not a problem, but just don't be disap...

Good balance of long and short wires

posted by QuackingPlums on 03/06/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
I bought these because the balance of long to short wires was better than the usual "equal numbers of each length" kits you normally get. You get a good bunch of the most useful 120mm wires, and just enough of the longer ones for the longer runs a...
    Cons:
The pins are bigger than I expected where they're soldered to the wire. I don't think it's likely to be a big problem unless yo...

Perfect for anybody needing a longer cable

posted by QuackingPlums on 01/08/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Someone once told me that the average distance between the nightstand and the nearest power socket in any hotel is the length of an iPhone cable plus two inches. Well not any more! I bought this as a charging cable although it is advertised as a data cable...
    Cons:
The cable on the dock connector comes out at a slight angle, which may indicate that it is working loose inside already. It sti...

    Simple but effective

    Pros:
I was looking for a stand to hold my Nexus 7 when I'm sat at my desk so that I could use it as a glorified clock and calendar. This stand is perfect for this purpose. It is made of tinted acrylic (I would call it brown rather than grey) and is steeper on on...
    Cons:
Packaging is poor - it came in a flimsy cardboard box that was all but unrecognisable by the time it arrived in the padded jiff...

    So good I bought several!

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
I bought one of these a while back for my Smart, which has very little storage space around its tiny dashboard. It just sits on the centre console and stays there under its own weight. The super-soft silicone material grips solidly to the plastic dash and k...
    Cons:
Dust is attracted to this and shows up due to the black, but then my dash is usually quite dusty anyway. My wife doesn't partic...

    Perfect for Nexus 7

posted by QuackingPlums on 01/08/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
I bought this for my Nexus 7 for when I'm carrying to around in my laptop bag. The case is perfectly sized for the Nexus and offers good protection against the other things floating around inside my backpack. It is made from two thick layers of a soft, velv...
    Cons:
The black exterior attracts dust and lint but it's not a big deal breaker. The catch also simply holds the two sides together, ...

    Fantastic for the price!

    Pros:
This cable is exactly what I was looking for - to give me the ability to charge and output the audio from my iPhone 4S to my car using a single cable, via the Apple dock connector. The USB plug goes into any USB socket for power - in my case it's the USB-ci...
    Cons:
Cable picks up a tiny bit of RF interference if I leave my phone on but it's a phone, and I'm in my car. It's never going to be...

    Perfect for gliders

posted by QuackingPlums on 08/09/2012 Certified Owner

    Pros:
Regular multi-strand red/white/black flat servo cable with Futaba style connectors on each end. Perfect for extending aileron servo leads on those servos with short leads (or gliders with massive wingspans).
    Cons:
    None

    Handy

    Pros:
Actually consists of 3 tools: pozi, flat blade and hex drive. I doubt I'll ever find a nut/bolt head small enough to fit the hex drive but the screwdriver ends are perfect for those tiny screws you find in everything from glasses to the back of a MBP!
    Cons:
    None.
