Perfect for lighting cupboards, walkways, etc

posted by QuackingPlums on 04/08/2014 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Only needs two AA batteries - my current units take four AAAs and isn't as bright (SKU: 106495 at time of writing). Very good brightness - possibly attributed to there being eight LEDs vs. six in my current ones. Light sensor seems very effective and more c...
    Cons:
Back is not detachable - would be handy if a permanent back could be attached to the wall/ceiling and the entire unit could be ...

Thin, lightweight, doesn't hide the details

posted by QuackingPlums on 12/09/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Very thin and very lightweight. Snaps on easily and securely. Protects the back and sides, which are prone to scratches, but doesn't hide them completely - the frosted rear panel is a nice touch. Face it, if like me, you upgraded from the 5 to the 5S then i...
    Cons:
Doesn't protect the front. At all. But who cares, you're getting an upgrade in what, 6 months' time anyway?

    Smaller than it looks

posted by QuackingPlums on 09/02/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
Compact and light. Stainless steel is well finished with no sharp edges. Resistant to fuel, acid, solvents, etc. Will probably stand up to hydrofluoric acid, since it's nowhere near as strong as Breaking Bad makes out...
    Cons:
It's a little bit small so you need to be careful you don't overflow - especially with some of those more nasty chemicals.

    Who doesn't need JST cables?

posted by QuackingPlums on 06/30/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Bulk pack makes these very economical. Nice long fly leads. Firm, solid connection.
    Cons:
PVC insulation melts very easily during soldering. Red plastic is slightly transparent, which isn't a bad thing but they do loo...

Can always use some silicone wire

posted by QuackingPlums on 06/30/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Silicone wire is awesome. The soft rubbery sheath protects the wire whilst remaining flexibility, and is resistant to heavy-handed soldering. I use this stuff in my RC aircraft - particularly multirotors that are usually bristling with technology that all n...
    Cons:
It would be nice if this was available in lengths greater than 1m.

    Perfect for hotels

posted by QuackingPlums on 06/30/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Everybody knows the unwritten rule of hotels: the distance from your bedside table to the nearest power socket is the length of an iPhone charge cable plus 3 inches. Well, with this cable I will no longer have to put up with charging my phone on the hotel r...
    Cons:
Quality not quite up to Apple standards but then, it's a tiny fraction of the cost of the "genuine" article (which is...

Shame about the bright blue LED lighting

posted by QuackingPlums on 03/10/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Four ports, 2.1A total output, 500mA per port if all four in use. Seems to supply more if using less (it charges my iPad fine without the annoying "not charging" message) but doesn't state anywhere that this is the case.
    Cons:
Bright blue LED lighting that surrounds the four USB ports is a little distracting. It makes the product look a little cheap in...

    Ideal for homebrew projects

posted by QuackingPlums on 03/06/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Good range of metal film resistors in hand-labelled strips. Ideal for all those Raspberry Pi, Arduino, etc. tutorials where they always seem to tell you to use the exact resistor you don't have!
    Cons:
Whilst the range is good you're not going to get a full series with just 20 values. It's not a problem, but just don't be disap...

Good balance of long and short wires

posted by QuackingPlums on 03/06/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
I bought these because the balance of long to short wires was better than the usual "equal numbers of each length" kits you normally get. You get a good bunch of the most useful 120mm wires, and just enough of the longer ones for the longer runs a...
    Cons:
The pins are bigger than I expected where they're soldered to the wire. I don't think it's likely to be a big problem unless yo...

Perfect for anybody needing a longer cable

posted by QuackingPlums on 01/08/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Someone once told me that the average distance between the nightstand and the nearest power socket in any hotel is the length of an iPhone cable plus two inches. Well not any more! I bought this as a charging cable although it is advertised as a data cable...
    Cons:
The cable on the dock connector comes out at a slight angle, which may indicate that it is working loose inside already. It sti...
