    General purpose portable 5V source

posted by Thiadmer on 07/22/2009 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
This little device creates 5V from a single AA battery. Its usefulness is not just for charging a phone, read "other thoughts", below. Mechanical construction is good.
    Cons:
The 5V output is not very well regulated. By my estimate (by looking at the output on an oscilloscope), the ripple is 0.5V. Thi...

posted by Thiadmer on 12/16/2008 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
The light is bright and has nice (pure) colours. Mounting the strips on a surface or wall is easy because of the brackets at both ends.
    Cons:
Of the 20 strips that I ordered, one has three LEDs (in a row) of the 30 do not light up in red. Another strip had an internal ...

    Tiny and adequate, supports RC5

posted by Thiadmer on 08/03/2008 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
It is cheap and it works adequately, although you sometimes need to press a button twice to get the command transmitted.
    Cons:
The build quality could be better. There appears to be a latency between pressing a button and the (infra-red) transmission of ...

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
It is cheap and it is small.
    Cons:
The USB extension cable on one of the five dongles that I bought was faulty (probably a broken wire).

Works very well in Windows XP

posted by Thiadmer on 07/06/2008 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
I have configured over 200 embedded controllers with this PCMCIA card in a laptop; it has not failed once.
    Cons:
The physical construction feels somewhat fragile. If you insert the PCMCIA card in its slot (in a laptop) and then pluf in the ...
