This is a breadboard, but cheap instead of insultingly expensive

posted by adlpz on 03/27/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
For some reason, solderless breadboards are crazy expensive on most local stores. Not this one. This breadboard will do just fine for most of your needs, and you won't have to sell your firstborn for a piece of plastic.
    Cons:
It's not top-quality, of course. You can fiddle around the pins and they might touch adjacent pads underneath if too crooked. B...

If you do breadboarding, you need this

posted by adlpz on 03/27/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
I used to cut my own wires for breadboard prototyping. Not anymore. With this set you get nice flexible wires with sturdy hard tips that should last you forever. Also, as a bonus, they come in nice colors so you can keep track of your connections. For the p...
    Cons:
I got one wire broken (the hard tip was missing), but hey, one of 70 isn't that problematic.

    Decent prototyping boards

posted by adlpz on 03/27/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
This is a decently-priced way of getting a solid prototyping platform for when you just want something a little bit more durable than a solderless breadboard. For around 60 cents a piece this are reasonably cheap.
    Cons:
The quality is not that amazing. The pads seem to resist soldering nicely, but I feel like too much rework would end detaching ...

    Essential kit for electronics dissassembly

posted by adlpz on 03/27/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
This set of plastic tools is simple and straightforward. You will need them if you want to open your consumer electronics without damaging components or bending the casings. The set has all sorts of tips and shapes and should suffice for most tasks
    Cons:
Not much to say, maybe they could have thrown in some screwdrivers, but hey, this is like three dollars shipped from thousands ...

    Good tweezers for the price

posted by adlpz on 03/26/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
This tweezers are cheap and the materials are decent enough. The three different sizes will fit almost any situation in hobby or electronics work.
    Cons:
One of mine came a bit bent. It was easy to put back in place, so there was no major issue here. But still, that means that the...

The cheapest set of picks ever

posted by adlpz on 03/26/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:less than 1 day

    Pros:
This set of picks is really cheap. This makes them great for the beginners and casual lockpickers who don't feel like spending much on a nice set of picks.
    Cons:
Again, they are really cheap. There is no case to speak of, and the materials aren't specially good. I managed to break one in ...

Cheap screwdriver set with decent quality

posted by adlpz on 03/23/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
This is a very comprehensive tool set. Has most of the bit you will find when dealing with consumer electronics and other small-devices work. The metal quality seems to be decent enough, you shouldn't be able to break the tips easily. Also, it is reasonab...
    Cons:
First and foremost, mine came with one missing bit (PZ1) and a duplicate Flathead 1. I understand that this is a cheap set, but...

For those of you that systematically break their phones

posted by adlpz on 03/07/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
It does the job. It's a cheap replacement for those of you that go around dropping your phones, like me. It is easy to install if you are familiar with the internals of the iPhone 3G
    Cons:
It's quality is definitely not as good as the original part. You can see backlight hotspots.

Good price, good quality, zero issues

posted by adlpz on 03/07/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
It does what it does, and it does it well. This unit allows you to use all that space wasted on a optical drive you haven't used in ages for more storage. It fits perfectly on my 13-inch Macbook Pro. Holds any standard-height 2.5-inch hard drive tightly an...
    Cons:
Nothing to complain of. This unit does the job just as well as a triple-priced one would.

    Good quality for the price

posted by adlpz on 12/17/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
It provides a stable flame, of which you can regulate the strength. Lights up consistently one every press. And it's really cheap. Not much else to ask for a lighter!
    Cons:
While it might indeed reach 1300C, this won't work as a metal melting or soldering tool. Should be fine for small pieces and el...
