    Compact conventional mousepad

posted by amujunen on 06/03/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Not too big, fits also cramped desks, too. Good standard textile material and wrist support is okay. Base/backing seems fine and does not emit strong odors, like some rubber bases do.
    Cons:
Quite lightweight and the backing material is not super-sticky (more like foamed plastic), so does not cling to desk with much ...

Easy and ultra-small USB WiFi dongle

posted by amujunen on 03/15/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Really, really small. Very economical price. Easy with at least Linux (Ubuntu quantal 12.10), just plug it in and the NetworkManager will just find the WiFi networks.
    Cons:
Cannot think of any, MediaTek chipset seems to work as it should at 2.4GHz (no 5GHz bands, of course at this price).

Small omnidirectional candle type incandescent replacement

posted by amujunen on 01/03/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
    - Small diameter, will fit most lamps that use E14 socket "candle" type bulbs. - Reasonably bright, corresponds roughly a 40--50W incandescent bulb. - Does not become hot at all, warms up just lightly (at <6W this is expected). - Very pleasa...
    Cons:
    - If the lamp is in the open (i.e. no opaque shield) it look rather "technical", with multiple LED light spots. - Co...

Cool white light wide-angle spot replacement

posted by amujunen on 12/31/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
    - Reasonably economical. - Direct E14 socket replacement, works beautifully with 230VAC at least. - Standard spot bulb size, so will fit probably most E14 lamps, even some of those usually using the "candle" bulb format. - Reasonably bright, so...
    Cons:
    - Might be too large in diameter to fit some of the "candle" type E14 lamps. - Since the LEDs are in a plane in one ...

    Well-built economical jumper wires

posted by amujunen on 12/31/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
    - Constructed from flexible ribbon cable, so you can separate the desired number of wires and keep them tidily together. - Reasonable-quality pins and socket connectors. - Connectors can be used at 2.54mm spacing, i.e. the black plastic casings are not to...
    Cons:
    - A bit short, 30cm (instead of 20cm) would be more versatile. - Cannot think of any other cons...

Super-low-cost pack of lots of pin-to-pin wires

posted by amujunen on 11/29/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Lots of pin-to-pin jumper cables for a low cost. The build quality seems just fine. There are lots (47) of the shortest (less than 10cm) wires.
    Cons:
The pins themselves are round (not rectangular like most breadboards would prefer) and at a bit thin. E.g. to hook up to regul...

Nicely built USB HID card rader for all OSes

posted by amujunen on 11/29/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Nice build, good enclosure finishing quality. Works as an USB HID keyboard so no drivers needed for most of operating systems, including Linux. Powered by USB cable, so you just hook it up and go.
    Cons:
Couldn't read our key entry cards which I thought were EMV4100 125kHz, but apparently not so. All-plastic and not water-proof ...

Decent modern Android 4.x small tablet

posted by amujunen on 11/29/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Cute looks, lightweight, modern/recent Android 4.0.4 (kernel 3.0.8 dated 2012-08-09); lots of languages (incl. Finnish). Relatively speedy and quite large 8GB flash for own data files and apps.
    Cons:
The display, albeit crisp, has quite low brightness even at its maximum. Also the backlight flickers a bit during first 5mins ...

    Decently-built Arduino Mega 2560 R1 board

posted by amujunen on 10/23/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
This is a really economical build of the old/original Arduino Mega 2560 Release 1 board. Quickly tested wth downloading/flashing a program and exercising the EEPROM, too---seems to work just as advertised. Unbeatable price, though since it is currently (2...
    Cons:
None really, the board came with a nice ESD protective bag, and with a USB cable, overall wrapped in bubble wrap. Nice build A...

Very decent and fast Android 4.0 (small) tablet

posted by amujunen on 10/23/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Small, light, surprisingly good battery life (when compared to other sub-$100 Android tablets); latest Android 4.0.4 with kernel 3.0.8+; Play Store supported; Flash preloaded (might be an outdated version, not integrated with Play, though might be wise Adob...
    Cons:
Touch screen sometimes a little finicky, and there seems to be no way to recalibrate it (built-in). LCD viewing angles could b...
