a cheap way to get a great PC gamepad

posted by axlety on 09/12/2010 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
I have tried a lot of old cheap gamepads, and they all don't work too well. But this one allows you to convert a playstation gamepad for PC use. Works great. I can play a lot of emulated games now. Also, you can use it as an extension for the USB port.
    Cons:
It would be nice if the USB port and gamepad were not exclusive, but hey, this is not a USB-hub after all. One annoying part is...

Great for old cars without MP3 players

posted by axlety on 09/12/2010 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
This is a convenient way to add MP3 playback to older cars. It has everything you would want: USB + SD support, led display, FM transmitter and even a remote control. Works flawlessly. All you need is an FM radio (and MP3 songs, of course)
    Cons:
The first one was defective: it blew both supplied fuses. The replaced item works just fine.

    Is a must for desoldering

posted by axlety on 09/12/2010 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
This works as promised. It helped me very much when repairing a motherboard. Otherwise, it is very difficult to remove the solder from the holes, because those are multi-layer boards, and the solder is lead-free.
    Cons:
    Could be cheaper/longer :p

performs as described, but not beyond

posted by axlety on 12/29/2009 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Works in Linux, Win95 and WinXP. Does not require CardBus, so it works on really old laptops. The build quality is good. I didn't notice the plastic case in the photos, so it came as a pleasant surprise.
    Cons:
Windows 3.1 does not include drivers for it, so they must be transferred separately (if they exist). Also I didn't have much lu...

cheap and does what it is supposed to do

posted by axlety on 04/05/2009 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Good build quality, not worse than original ones. Conduct electric current (duh!)
    Cons:
    Out of my three multimeters it only fits one (and even for that one it does not fit too well) f i v e h u n d r e d w o r d s f...

cheap and does what it is supposed to do

posted by axlety on 04/05/2009 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Has strong suction. Easy to operate. Solder does not stick to it. Has instructions in English. Good build quality. Automatically ejects collected solder.
    Cons:
The instructions say that the tip can be twisted off, but I tried it for some time and it didn't give in. I'm afraid I would br...

cheap and does what it is supposed to do

posted by axlety on 04/05/2009 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Elastic, adjustable - comfortable to wear. The wire can stretch a lot and is detachable - gives freedom of movement. Entire inner surface is conductive, not only the part with connector. It really has 1 MOhm resistance. Good build quality
    Cons:
    No instructions in English. F i v e h u n d r e d w o r d l i m i t F i v e h u n d r e d w o r d l i m i t F i v e h u n d r e...

    affordable replacement antenna

posted by axlety on 03/22/2009 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
The antenna is cheap and it works. It can lock in 3 positions. Big and heavy - looks strong.
    Cons:
Does not offer any signal improvement over stock antenna. In fact, it is even slightly worse! The connector is metal, but is pa...

Fun at fist, but not too useful.

posted by axlety on 02/02/2009 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:less than 1 day

    Pros:
Relatively cheap. Works as advertised. Optics is ok - the light forms a spot. Exterior build quality is all right. Wrist strap is a plus.
    Cons:
The flywheel is too small, it won't keep the dynamo running for even a second after a single squeeze. The power on/off switch ...
