    How to change the combination!

posted by dansdata on 02/26/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Super-cheap, not as flimsy as its almost-all-plastic design might suggest. Yes, it is basically a toy, but for the money it's quite a good one.
    Cons:
Anybody with a hammer could probably defeat this lock easily, You could also probably just yank it apart by putting a foot in t...

    Excellent for the money

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Big enough to be a useful general-purpose knife. Comfortable plastic handle. Plastic sheath fits blade snugly; it's easy to pull the blade out, but it won't fall out by accident. VERY cheap.
    Cons:
Only about an inch of tang inside the plastic handle, so not suitable for rough use. The super-shiny blade of my knife came wit...

    Works fine, super-cheap!

posted by dansdata on 02/15/2009 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Works fine. Has half-press for focus, full-press for taking a picture, and lock-down for "bulb" mode, which you really can't use properly without a remote switch.
    Cons:
Doesn't have quite as nice a feel as the genuine Canon item; you may find yourself taking a few pictures by accident while you ...

    Robot-light!

posted by dansdata on 02/15/2009 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
When you fold the light-arm flat, the LED turns off. Press the "OPEN" button on the side and the LED turns on, while the automatic double-jointed arm swings out. It uses grease-friction joints so it opens smoothly over about half a second, which l...
    Cons:
Powered by little button cells, not AAAs or AAs, so battery life is likely to be pretty ordinary. It'll still give you enough l...

Great price for a surprisingly ubiquitous battery

posted by dansdata on 02/15/2009 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Quality GP batteries (huge Chinese manufacturer, not some weird off-brand), way cheaper than Energizers or Duracells from the supermarket, which are unlikely to be any better.
    Cons:
The average household only needs one or two of these at a time. But at this price, you can give a couple to the neighbours :-).

Yep, that's electrical tape, all right

posted by dansdata on 01/26/2009 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Every home should have electrical tape. It's got a million and one uses. Two rolls for $1.99 is a fine price.
    Cons:
This is ordinary vinyl electrical tape, with the usual gooey adhesive on the back, so it's not a very good choice if you want t...

    It works!

posted by dansdata on 01/13/2009 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
About as small as a functional water pipe can be. Pretty easy to clean, quite easy to use, looks nice (when it's clean...), quite easy to conceal.
    Cons:
The only removable part is the cone and stem, which are one piece and screw in. It'd be much easier to clean the pipe if there ...

    Neat optical novelty

posted by dansdata on 12/30/2008 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Does what it says on the tin. Comfortable enough, even for quite large heads. Dirt cheap.
    Cons:
Chunky "Buddy Holly" frames. Only useful as 3D glasses if you've got something to look at that polarises the two eyes...

    Great value

posted by dansdata on 11/20/2008 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
World-voltage compatible, and seem quite well made; I've had an amber-LED version of this for years now, and it hasn't died or set the house on fire yet.
    Cons:
If you want the lights to be on constantly, you have to press the mode button seven times every time you plug them in. Any slig...

    Great little Kershaw knock-off

posted by dansdata on 11/20/2008 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
This is a downsized copy of the much more expensive Kershaw "External Toggle" knife. I bought a few black ones on eBay some time ago, and this "camo" one is even cheaper, so I wanted to see if it was junk. It's not!
    Cons:
Clearly not as good, or as big, as the Kershaw product it's based on. The External Toggle mechanism is a lot of fun to play wit...
