Another cheap adapter that must be in your drawer

posted by kirovclass on 06/01/2013 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Very cheap adapter, robust build. It is very useful in situations like you have a new device (e.g. smartphone) that has only HDMI output and your monitor is not-so-new and it has at best DVI.
    Cons:
    No cons found so far.

    Simple tester

posted by kirovclass on 12/04/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
This is what I call plug-and-play! There is nothing to be explained about this item, if you know already how to plug a PC power supply. It shows on the LCD display the voltage for each of the single power rails (which can be useful to monitor when putting ...
    Cons:
None. The product is very compact and practical to use.

    Good diagnostic board

posted by kirovclass on 12/04/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
Nice diagnostic analyzer for computers. It can connect to all kind of computers as it has PCI, USB etc. plugs. The display is very clear and it shows the output/error codes
    Cons:
As the board can only display numeric codes, it is necessary to always keep the manual together. As it is a complex board, the ...

    Tiny successful barometric sensor

posted by kirovclass on 12/04/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Tiny board with very successful Bosch BMP085. The sensor is very... sensitive to pressure variations. Considering that it's targeted to prototype hobbyist it's good to get it delivered with the connector not yet soldered (somebody may e.g. just solder direc...
    Cons:
Can't see much fault in such a simple sensor. Perhaps if it would be shipped with even some tiny protection cage/grid (even pla...

    Good weathr sensor

posted by kirovclass on 12/04/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Nice environmental sensor, it uses 1-wire protocol so simple to use, and also if powered at 5V the cable can be long up to 20m (according to datasheet). Good to have it also terminated with wires rather than headers/pins.
    Cons:
    For the price, nothing really.

    Good hall-effect sensor

posted by kirovclass on 12/04/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Tiny board, a good choice if somebody is looking for a cheap hall-effect sensor to monitor currents.
    Cons:
The clearance between PCB traces in the input section is quite small (under 1mm), so I would not dare to use it as it is at mai...

    Can't be simpler

posted by kirovclass on 12/04/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Very simple board, that allows in a very simple way to connect a wii nunchuck to your Arduino project, without ripping out connectors or having 'flying' wires.
    Cons:
Considering that it's just one PCB strip and one header, and that the two are well soldered together, no complains. Well, the m...

    When you need local storage

posted by kirovclass on 12/04/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Simple daughterboard that can help you to provide your Arduino project with a local non-volatile storage. PCB design seems very clean, nothing to complain about it.
    Cons:
None, really. The mini-board is really plug-and-play (and then it's only about usin gthe right software to access it).

Necessary addition to 'male' jumper cables

posted by kirovclass on 12/04/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
They are easy to use, and they are shipped as a ribbon, so until you start taking them apart they keep nice and tidy in your accessory box. The connectors look of ok-quality (at least for prototyping).
    Cons:
No cons. Maybe having more lengths would be nice, but the 30cm is a good average for most projects.

    Good adapter overall

posted by kirovclass on 10/26/2012 Certified Owner

Involvement:Expert (understands the inner workings) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Very useful adapter to have, in order to (re)use some old 1.8" hard disks for some silent storage
    Cons:
So far, none. The adapter does its job properly.
