Cute! But almost guaranteed to arrive broken

posted by mdwyer on 12/05/2011 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
    - I smile every time I see it. - No batteries needed
    Cons:
    - It will most likely be crushed in shipping. The good news is that it is relatively simple to snap the two halves apart, put ...

Great starter package, but not much more than that

posted by mdwyer on 12/05/2011 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
    - Includes 12v driver - Pre-terminated -- no soldering needed - True EL-wire -- not an LED light-pipe.
    Cons:
    - Noisy inverter may drive you crazy with high-pitched squeal. - End cap is somewhat bulky, which may make it difficult to stri...

    Large, sturdy, and effective

posted by mdwyer on 06/21/2011 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
These use a thick, sturdy black plastic frame, better in quality to those that current western RealD movie theaters pass out, but probably not as good as those in IMAX theaters. (See the CONS, though!) The frame has a good curve on them, which covers the e...
    Cons:
Note that most modern 3D display use a completely different process (polarizers). These are not suitable for 3DTV, or RealD 3D...

Cheap way to keep obscure batteries on-hand

posted by mdwyer on 04/07/2011 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Each battery is sealed in a plastic bag, so you can just toss them into your camera bag without fear of them shorting out anything. This is a great way to keep these batteries on hand. They are regularly used in photo and flashlight applications. Buying t...
    Cons:
They may not last as long as the ones you pick up at the store, but it is very difficult to argue with the price.

    Wrong signalling for high-power devices

posted by mdwyer on 04/07/2011 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Small. This often only sticks out about 1cm from the dash. It isn't exactly pretty, but it is not ugly, either. Only a faint green LED, so you don't get blinded by garish blue LEDs.
    Cons:
It doesn't appear to have the right signalling set up. So even though it claims to be able to send 1A, most intelligent device...

    Shipping has improved

posted by mdwyer on 04/07/2011 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 day to 1 week

    Pros:
Everything takes these batteries, yet whenever you want one, they're $5 each. This lets you buy a whole bunch of them at a more reasonable price, then they're always on hand!
    Cons:
They may not have the best life, but I'm not sure I'll ever notice.

Cheapest, easiest way to get multiple cams in a PC

posted by mdwyer on 07/28/2009 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
This gives you four inputs for a price most would charge for just one. Works well under Linux v4l (bttv card=77).
    Cons:
Very picky about resources. You may have to shuffle around PCI cards before you find a slot that doesn't interfere with other ...

Play DVDs and games on your old PC monitors

posted by mdwyer on 07/28/2009 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:1 week to 1 month

    Pros:
Very easy to use. Just plug in the your source -- VGA, Composite, or SVIDEO, press a button or two, and the picture just appears on the screen.
    Cons:
Switches video sources easily, but doesn't handle audio at all. You will need your own speakers, and possibly a way to switch ...

It works, but not with any style or substance.

posted by mdwyer on 07/06/2009 Certified Owner

Involvement:General (knows how to use it) - Ownership:more than 1 month

    Pros:
Very inexpensive. Same form-factor as the OEM model, which fits well in the hand.
    Cons:
Button feels cheap -- it feels like a pair of reed switches, and doesn't have a comforting 'snap' of a buckling spring microswi...
